When I were a mere lad mum used to send me to the corner shop for various food.
Sugar was weighed out by the 1Lb into a blue paper bag from the bulk stock. The top of this bag was folded over to seal it and I was instructed to carry the bag upright or spillage might occur.
Biscuits were displayed in part of the counter with transparent lids, the lid was lifted up and biscuits were scooped out into a paper bag on the shop scales, once filled the top of said bag was rolled up (with some style) to seal it.
I have absolutely no idea how that lot would have been listed for sell-by, but if the biscuits were a bit soft you mentioned it to the shopkeeper, said shopkeeper would apologise and say she now had new stock some freebie biscuits usually followed.
Something that puzzles me more than sell/use by is the once opened period on pickles etc.
I thought pickling was meant for preserving things through winter, if Granny pickled something, when the jar was opened you kept eating the contents until nothiing was left in the jar, it did not seem to matter how long that took.
Now most shop bought pickles seem to be labelled 'use within something like 6 weeks of opening'.
