Unknown myford capstan tooling

I have another horsebox full of stuff from my late Dads workshop. Still more to get.

I have searched my books and scoured the internet but it's not easy to find info on something when you are not entirely sure what it is to start with.

This is a few of the capstan tooling items i am unsure about. I either have

• NO idea at all
• Half an idea (but unsure what it is for and don't know the proper name
• Know what it is for but don't know its proper name to get info

Also thanks for the help given on the mystery casting. I now have found the capstan and stop that attached to it. If I had those before, it would have been clear.

Right. Number 1 (clueless as to what to start searching for. I think I can see what it should do but need to search for more info)

Item 2 (Similar to one but without guide rollers)

Item 3 (I know what it looks a bit like, offset boring bar but doesnt seem to go "offset"???

Item 4 (Totally clueless)

Item 5 Well, I think it is a die holder but its complexity makes me unsure. When it pulled "out" it exposes 2 pegs and will rotate (one direction only due to the springs and rollers inside) When its "back together. The pegs stop it rotating any more.

Looks like the following:

1. Roller box, for reducing the diameter of stock, rollers act like a travelling steady

2. Same as 1, presumably for short lengths where rollers are not needed

3. Probably for holding round shank tooling, such as a Coventry die box

4. No idea, but it seems to have some adjustment, so may be this is for boring bars?

5. As stated, probably for holding dies; the pegs will pull out when the correct thread length is reached. The lathe is then reversed to remove the die from the work.

1 Roller box tool

2 could be a tangential turning tool but looks like it should have a brass bar through the round hole as a steady

3 to take drills and reams etc. You can slacken off, clock the tool up and lock it in place

4 looks like a boring head

5 Holds taps and dies, I have one sa next to me.

3 .. used for round endworking tools.. ( norrmally) two piviots allow adjustment of center height..( boring bars)..

still used in production to this day.

4 again drill / reamer..holder ….. hex bit is adaptor bush to fill in gap from ( looks like 1/4&quot to the holder size.

2 Tangental roller box

3 unsupported tool holder for chamfering etc.

4 Adjustable reamer holder

5 Looks like a tap holder

6 Die holder

Brilliant game! I'm enjoying the responses! Love the amount of knowledge on this site!

Have just found another "item", it may not even be to do with anything in the boxes though.
