”Being of Swiss manufacture the lathe was not only made from the finest quality material but built to the very highest standards – and given a superb cosmetic finish. It was also, naturally, extremely expensive.”
There are good reasons why a vertical milling machine doesn’t look much like a lathe stood on end. If for no other reason that it takes for ever to switch between the 2 modes. Much better to have dedicated machines.
Similarly with multi role aircraft, a dedicated interceptor (fighter) will be better, ditto a bomber.
If you have the room for them. if I had one of these I would have more bench space, and the option of horizontal milling, slotting and even a power hacksaw – I’d certainly sacrifice a little set-up time for that (I think one of its claimed advantages was fast switching modes). Of course you can’t have two machines set up simultaneously, but there we go, life isn’t perfect.
Out of experience the Adock and Shipley Universal Machine Tool does not need to hide behind the Swiss quipment.
For a Universal it does a lot of things well without much trouble. The lathe, Mill and Drill need no conversion, the only thing that does need a conversion is to set up the grinder which indeed needs a lot of cleaning after use especially the lathe area.
I have the mill and Lathe in Daily use and am really pleased with the performance.
