I’ve used Rocol Ultracut 370 since the late ’90s and now I’m down to my last bit thought I’d order some more – until I saw the price. Is there any other product that comes close in terms of performance and corrosion resistance, but is more affordable? At one time Ultracut was available in 1 litre bottles, which for the home workshop was ideal, as it lasts a very long time.

No idea where you live, but you could try asking Pennine Lubricants for their equivalent.
Some are available in 5l others in 1litre bottles.

We use a Rocol soluble oil at the museum in squirt bottles mixed about 10%, the original container was donated over 18 years ago, I would not fancy having to replace it. Our use means there is very little chance of any bacteria growing in it.

I’m about halfway through the 5 litre bottle of Ultracut I got about 25 years ago. The low concentrations needed make it very economical in use but 5 litres is probably a lifetime supply for a Model Engineer or Home Workshop person. Filled the cutting oil tank on my Smart & Brown 1024 so I guess my theoretical consumption of around 10 years per litre is an over-estimate.

Eye-watering price is worth it to me because you don’t have the smell,  biological and bacteria issues of conventional suds. I did get a bottle of one of the neat cutting oils from by one of the Model Engineer suppliers but it seemed too thick and I never got on with it. Probably most of it still left, I should find a home for it.

Occasionally I’ve tried other cutting fluids, but nothing as good as Ultracut. That’s not to say that there isn’t anything else that’s close that I’m unaware of. My present rate of use is also about 10 years per litre. Apart from the performance and improved surface quality of the work, there’s no rusting or staining of machine parts.

The lowest price I’ve seen is around £160 for 5 litres.

Take a poll here and see if Anyone wants a bottle of it. (in USA).
