Ugears wooden mechanical models

I actually picked up two of these kits based on seeing the article in MEW 343.  I got the Astronomer Table Clock and the Aero Clock.  Both look very cool and I’m looking forward to building them.

My kids keeo giving me these at birthdays and xmas – I think they’re testing for when I lose the capability to follow sequenced instructions – so I’ve built a few of ’em.

They require close attention and sometimes there’s a risk of breaking parts as you press them out, so all-purpose superglue’s handy.

They’re good fun and generally work well.

Not something I had when I was a kid.  I remember a book that had punch-out parts for building a paper clock, but it didn’t work well.  CAD and CNC has really upped things.

I have a box of flexible single-edge razor blades that should work for cutting the wooden parts free.  Really looking forward to having time to build these.

Also, I’m glad you got yours working well, Mick.  That’s encouraging.  Another kit I got – from different manufacturer – has a few complaints of ill-fitting parts.  But assembly experiences do differ.  Growing up, I had one friend down the street who always had leftover parts when building plastic models.  I never understood that.

I’ve done a few UGears models. There are other good makes too. I did this during covid:

ROKR Locomotive LK701

(I don’t think, a few years on, I could tackle it now though – my fingers wouldn’t let me).

I did that one a couple of years ago. It still whips across the kitchen floor pretty quick – but the 5-year-old grandson can’t really handle things gently yet, so I have to keep reminding him… 🙂

I broke a part or two popping them out of the matrix on the first model I built. Nominally they just push out under thumb pressure but some parts are a little fragile because of their shape/size.

Once I realised that and took the time to consider each part and take appropriate action (Exacto knife in some cases; extra support etc), it wasn’t a problem going forward. Above all don’t try to hurry.
