I'm another who can't see the point of all these stupid timewasting things. If someone wants to know what I'm doing, then either come and see me (preferably) or phone me (undesirable now due to a drastic hearing loss). In fact, I've now taken to refusing to give out my mobile 'phone number on the grounds of it being switched off 95% of the time.

Final comment from me: How did we manage without all these fancy ideas?

You may not want people to know what you are doing but they will only find out if you tell them (by Tweeting), however you might want to know what other people (or organisations, companies etc) are doing.

You can look at Twitter without posting anything which is something I found out about a year ago. Before then, like you, I could not see the point of it and never thought it would be of use to me. I now know it is.

I must admit, I'm really taken aback by how offended most people are.

You know, no-one is forcing anyone to look at twitter! – or forcing me to use it. To be honest it took me three years to get the account details… I still don't know how to access the MEW facebook account.

As no forum members can be described as 'reactionary old gits', I can only assume my postings here are so valued by you all, that you can't bear to think I may be distracted by Twitter.

            I'm not offended.

I'm 63, but pretty computer savvy – I have a desktop computer, laptop, an iPhone and iPad, and spent my latter working life at a computer all day.

I belong to lots of forums, and I use Facebook and WhatsApp, but have never really found a personal use for a Twitter account.

I have already got too many things to do and not enough time to do them in, but that's one of the drawbacks of retirement!

I always thought Twitter and Facebook were for people without hobbies . . .

This is the only Social Media site I am on my life is too busy for much else, I have looked at Neil’s Twitter pages and hope people may be interested to find out more about the hobby from that.

Twitter and Facebook etc appear to be the information sharing media of choice for a large number of people, therefore I reckon it makes sense for ME and MEW to have a presence on them.

That’s my two Pennyworth on the subject anyway!

Haven't gone to Twitter yet. Not too bothered about it.

I was forced to.undergo training to use face crook and Twitter by my job. Apparently it’s a great way to reach the yoof etc etc.
I deleted the accounts I was forced to create within minutes of the course ending. I’ve not even been tempted to look at either since.
I live for the day when Facebook falls and people have to get on with life instead of moaning on about it online.
Heard something on the news that millenials (the yoof) don’t answer their phones or the front door to avoid confrontations; very much like the orange idiot across the pond firing people by Twitter.

I suspect that some of the offence was taken in reaction to the first line of your opening post. … Yes, I noticed the smiley thing at the end, but my initial reaction was:

"… the rot is setting in"

Well there you go. You've completely misunderstood your constituency.

This is the mirror image of Bob Brown's 'Helping Young People' thread. In that one, we express great concern that young people don't know what we know. In this one we reject any notion of understanding what the young are up to.

It's inevitable. Their world is not our world. They do learning, we have experience. In the end youth always wins. They have the advantage of building on our achievements, whilst we become set in our ways and then die.

Enjoy life while it lasts and give the other a guy a break. Even if he is a spotty ignoramus!

Wow, who cares if you don't like twitter? I don't either but I'm not about to shoot at Neil when he sticks his head over that parapet to try and stay in contact with the yoof. Who probably think this forum is laughably antiquated.

Lesson learned Neil. If you're going to post something like this again make sure you can lock the topic immediately so you don't get a barrage of harrumphs.

If you want to reach people you have to go where they are.

                                IanP,

My limited understanding of these so-called social accounts is that they are mainly used by people with nothing better to do. In which case they won't be interested in what I'm doing, and I certainly aren't interested in what they are doing.

Those people who do know what I'm doing, do indeed know what I'm doing, if that makes sense, so there is no need to tell them. Ditto those people who I want to know what I'm doing, do indeed already know. Hence as far as I am concerned there is next to nothing to be gained by me from Twitter.

On a general note, I have over the last few months (since it got too cold to go in the garage) spent far too long using this electronic bunch of tricks. I had been thinking that I might, just might, be able to get in the garage and have a tidy up and a memory refresh of what I was doing sometime last year. Only problem is that "The Beast from The East" looks like arising again.

                                Bazyle,

I'd like to think that I might experience what you are saying. Sadly, if I'm still around in 40 years time, I'll be in the running for being one of the world's oldest men. Mind you, I might even be able to meet my great-great-grandchildren. As it is, I think I've a good chance of seeing my grandsons' weddings, a reasonable chance of seeing my elder granddaughter wed, and very unlikely to see my younger granddaughter wed, more's the pity..

                                Regards,

                                Peter G. Shaw

I just wonder if the twitterati are so busy telling the world what they have been doing that they don't have time to do anything. My mobile phone wasn't very mobile today as I left it in the upstairs bathroom, wondered why I was having such a peaceful day. Of course when SWMBO got home I got both barrels for not answering my phone, but it was almost worth it.

I don't use a mobile phone and the one I do have will not do twitter,I like to be able to go out without anyone being in touch especialy the wife.I have no wish to be on twitter or facebook but I think that if Neal thinks it will be good for getting in touch with younger people go for it.I asked some youngsters if they would like to see my engines and they said no but reading about it on twitter might spark some interest,as I think like a lot of hobby interests that have already gone our age group will follow unless we accept someone trying to do something about it.

Not working for me I'm afraid Neil. Features lists Exhibitions, Locomotives, Visits, Article Reprints, Magazine Reprints

Can't see anything twitter related apart from this thread.

                                                I'm Firefox 59.0 Ubuntu 17.10

This is what I'm looking at this morning:

Those of a nervous disposition who fear that a visit to Twitter may ruin them for life can view the three most recent tweets (at any time) on the 'Features' page of this website.

I am using an iPad and Neil’s link takes me to the Twitter page

Just tried it on a windows machine and his link takes me straight to Twitter (Windows 8.1 PC using IE).

I know nothing about Firefox or Ubuntu though.

Hmmm, still not seeing it. I've no trouble finding twitter itself as per V8Eng, just the latest tweets not appearing following Neil's instructions. This is what I get:

                                                      lf.jpg

Please be gentle with me! What am I doing wrong?
