I am considering purchasing a 626 turret mill and Warco and Chester came up.These mills look quite similar on the respective websites and the table sizes are almost identical but there semms to be a difference in weight-300 to400 kg.

Does anybody know if these machines are identical and if there is any difference

      in build quality or precision?

Can one expect better rigidity in a turret type as compared to a column type e.g. sieg X3?

      Your opinions please

The 626 is a very common import mill. You could try a ‘closest to the bull’ approach and look at other suppliers’ quoted weight. If you find nine people telling you it is 300kg and one saying it is 400kg, you can make a choice on who to believe.

I was looking at another mill wrt the weight and noticed an old company brochure mentioned gross and net weights which might account for the different values. I’m familiar with gross and net being used for say a bottle full or empty but not sure about a milling machine. One possibility is that the extra is the stand.

I agree that they are essentially the same machine with detail differences – I notice Warco offer R8 spindle-socket whilst Chester’s seem to be Morse taper..

Being at a similar price-point I don’t think there is much scope for one to be vastly different from the other in terms of build quality or precision

            – perhaps an important consideration might be the level of service /support / interest that might be expected from the suppliers..

Yes, I think that last Post summed it up well. What matters is what level of support and back-up you can expect from the supplier, sometimes it,s not always great.

On the subject of support, I’ve had excellent service from Warco (can’t speak for Chester).  I say had, because I don’t know what things are like currently now Roger Warren has gone, and the company have moved.  Let’s hope all is still good.

I have no knowledge of either machine … but the availability of R8 would be the deciding factor for me, if they were otherwise similar.

Not sure now but Warco used to include delivery and others not always. The Warco delivery guys were in my experience really helpful because they dealt mostly with amateurs so knew the difficulties we have moving stuff alone.

If my experience with an ARC milling machine delivery is  valid, then Net is the weight of the bare machine, and Gross is the weight of the machine packaged, with accessories for transport, including the pallet and case. The latter is what the transport company needs, the former is what you need when positioning.

Thanks Peter, seems kind of obvious now.

Just to clear up a point made by Diogenes, my 626 mill with R8 spindle was bought from Chesters. Of course, this may not mean that they still supply the particular model, but it’s worth investigating further if  that’s what you want.
