Might be worth having a look at Rapid Electronics (www.rapidonline.com) – no connection apart from as a customer. Look for cat. no’s 06-0690 & 06-0962 these might be suitable for a bit of experimentation. Rapid also stock plastic gears and pulleys which you might find useful for your project.

Circlips suggestion of a little computer fan is pretty handy.

 

How did you decide on how much torque you needed? And how do you know how much you are going to get?

 

You know your pump velocity  – assuming 1425 RPM you can calculate impellor tip speed.

 

Allow a bit for losses down the pipe, on the basis that its worth being approximately right rather than exactly wrong. 

 

You’l know how much you are going to get = 1/2rho, u^2, S sin alpha. . Once you know alpha(which you can look up in most charts, because they will give you an optimum for that velocity, and the approximate loads of whatever device you are going to drive, you will then know A and once you know A you can work out diameters and chords.

 

Its really quite easy, and a lot better than several failed attempts and empirical playing around, when you can get it mostly right first time with a few back of fag packet sums..
