I am considering using an Armstrong siddley 6hp (600cc) single cylinder stationery engine as a prototype for a model ic  design project. As he scale is yet to be decided i thought it might be a good idea to ask if anyone has made a succesful 4 stroke diesel as i have not seen one discussed or exhibited anywhere. I would expect the fuel to be standard diesel fuel ,bur some rough calculations suggest that ignition additives may be neededany ideas??Mike H

There was an article a while back about a very early diesel with proper fuel injection running at 150bar, there are still some photos in the album section somewhere

There was a guy in the netherlands built a true Diesel in a model size, it was covered in “Simply IC ” magazine. I can’t remember much about it but will see if I can locate the issues I have.

            regards

I’ve never seen a true diesel model engine but something that piqued my interest last week was a farm type water pump that was powered by a diesel engine not much larger than the typical villiers 5hp engine. this was a commercially built portable pump.

I dont know how they did it but it seems that we need to try harder.

by the way if you want absolutely consistent diesel fuel use avtur.
                  aviation turbine fuel.

I made a true diesel engine in 1:10 scale so it is possible. You can read more about my engine in Model engineer Vol. 203,  august 2009, page 280-283 and 391-393. If you come to the Netherlands I can run it for you. If you decide to bult a diesel engine you have to experiment a lot to get it running.

                    Succes with your engine,

                    Regards,  Johan.

I just bought a little Peugeot diesel, which set me to thinking that on the 1.9 litre engine, each cylinder is 475 cc.  so the injection system might just be adaptable to an engine as small as 100 cc.  Scrapyards should have a selection of injectors and pumps to experiment with.   I have yet to pick up a service manual, so I’m not too well informed on the minutiae, just my old training on the big diesels kicking in.

some time ago there was an article and account of the trials and tribulations in the German Maschinen im Modellbau magazine. If you are interested please let me know I can look if I can find the article though this is in German.

The engines on this site are not full diesel but this site may be usefull.

Many thanks to all who have responded, there is loads of stuff to follow up on  .It seems i may have raised a little interest and will try to do some serious basic design work time permitting. Mr Howard Jones’s  advice re Avtur is v interesting . Once again thanks to all
