Lots of folks have asked me for some more information on my homemade DIY Transmissions that I made for running accessories at different speeds from the variety of Model Engines that we run. The ball bearing race hint that I mention in the video is really important for our very limited power wise model, toy steam engines, Stirling engines and Hit & Miss engines as any power robbing friction that we can eliminate is very beneficial.

Hope this video helps, if not just reach out.

I never seem to see the video links which makes the postings useless to me.

The link is to a Youtube video and you need an account to sign in.

A Google account is required in order sign into YouTube. However, for those who already have an email account (or just don’t want a Gmail account), Google accounts can be made using any valid non-Gmail address. You will need to navigate to Google’s Sign Up Without Gmail page in your web browser and complete the form (the mobile app does not have the option to create a non-Gmail Google account, although you can use a mobile browser). Keep in mind that you can browse and watch videos, as well as utilize other YouTube functionality without signing up for an account as well.

It used to be so much easier before the forum format changed.

If you want very low drag bearings, remove the cages, carefully grind a filling slot, and make them full compliment bearings. If you use Stainless steel bearings, you can change the steel balls to ceramic balls, and wont require any lubrication with the stainless not rusting over time. Full compliment bearings have 1 less ball than being completely filled. Cages are very draggy. A full compliment bearing with ceramic balls is very quite and will free spin for at least 2times longer than the clean caged bearing with steel balls. If you polish the inner and outer race with balsa wood and diamond compound of 3um or finer, or tetrabore polish cutting compound, they will spin for another 10% of time or so, but will be alot quieter too. Ceramic balls in nominal sizes are available with a search on various sites like the Bay and Express etc. Some bearing retailers also stock ceramic balls at still a fair price, but importantly, are only a day or 2 away.

As a work-arounduntil someone finally fixes the bug that is making this forum incompatible with Safari [and perhaps some other browsers] … Here is a link to Blue Heeler’s Videos on YouTube:

                    https://www.youtube.com/@SteamEngines/videos

I reported the Bug months ago, and [with thanks to Silly Old Duffer] have discovered what appears to be the necessary fix … but we need someone to try implementing it.
