Traction Engine waggons etc

Hello

 

For a long time I have been hunting for a set of drawings for a traction engine waggon and a living van, does anyone have any drawings or know where I can find a set i could use.

 

alternitavly does anyone have a copy of GFA Gilberts Book “Burrell Style” or know where I can obtain a copy as I belive there is a couple of drawings in the book that might be of help

John Haining did drawings for a 2″ Road Rolling contractors living van, you can get the drawings (TE25) from Myhobbystore or blackgates.

 

Berrybrook do drawings for a 6″ Traction Waggon which could be scaled to suit your engine.

Regarding Gilbert’s books they do come up on e-bay and amazon so keep an eye out.

John Haining did drawings for 2 living vans. Can’t remember when, but I do have those issues in the workshop. Geoff Gilbert also wrote a book on steam thrashing and produced one of Folwer works drawings which includes at least a living van drawing. Will send an off list message later when I have had time to check, but I do have all the Geoff Gilbert books

Must clear up the workshop as I cannot find the relevent issues of ME right now, but the index shows that John Haining had articles on living vans and water carts in alternate issues from no. 3774 to no. 3790.

 

Geoff Gilbert has very good drawings of a Burrell traction wagon and of a log wagon in Burrell Style. He also has a copy of a Fowler works drawing for a ploughing living van in his book Fowler Steam Cultivating Machinery. The latter would have come from MERL at Reading so if you want to make a Fowler wagon then an enquiry to MERL should come up with a works drawing to work from, I do not know what they charge. A message off list might help for personal research purposes

I have now started a photo album. In it are drawings for Burrell log wagon and traction wagon and Fowler ploughing team living van. The Burrell drawings are in 2 parts each as they were too big to go in the scanner in one hit. Hope they are useful

Thanks for the info Sean any chance of posting a few drawing dimentions i.e. hight from ground to load deck and height of sides etc for the drop side waggon and the same for the living van.

 

I aim to create a scale drawing for my 7/8th Traction engine (a conversion of a Wilesco with gas burner, new boiler, new smoke box, etc)

For anyonje wanting wagons etc for Mamod or Wilesco sized engines, then the Steam Apprentice Club web site has some useful drawings to download. They organise a model competition each year at the Great Dorset Steam Fair and the plans are on the web site, under “Activities” for a Wagon, water cart and organ. This year’s model is a gallopers horse or a cockerell, the plans for that are in the “Competitions” page.

Thanks for the scans as regards the Wilesco converstion I havent started it yet, just formulating ideas have you got the web address for the Steam Apprentice Club web site I am currently sorting out ideas for a propper waggon and ratyher like the look of the Fowler living van

Yes I have a couple somewhere in the basment – what I am looking for is a picture from a recent eng’ show where someone exhibited a part built engine using Mamod wheels looked like the rest was scratch built

The Steam Apprentice Club cab be found at http://www.ntet.co.uk/sac/ look under Activities. Plans are basic, but can produce good results.

 

For anyone under 21 the SAC is a good organisation which produces a magazine, organises drivign days wehre memners get to learn how to prepare, drive and look after both full size and model traction engines and membership also allows free entry to a large number of traction engine rallies, including the Great Dorset steam Fair – the saving on the latter for going for one day pays for the annual membership alone.

             One of the high schools in Christchurch (NZ) had evening classes that made a small/ toy traction engine, the classes were so popular that there was a waiting list to get in, there must be hundreds of them . They had cast wheels, and flywheel, and a length of maybe 200 mm. I doubt if the school is doing evening classes this year, if in fact they have reopened after the earthquakes. Ian S C
