I've just cut a 1/4" whitworth thread on some 1/4" silver steel rod and I'm not very impressed with the quality. The rod is as it came from the supplier and turned ok. I've not used the HSS die before that I can remember so it can't be worn out. Any ideas? I used cutting compound and opened the split die as far as it would go. I also put a nice long lead on the rod before cutting. The taper on the die seemed to be on the side with the size marked on it so I lead with that side.

Anyone know of a good source for ground mild steel?

Silver steel threads poorly with a die in my experience. Might be worth annealing it fully first.

          Try looking for 'PGMS'

SS does not thread that well. I have got PGMS from College Engineering and M-Machine

Thanks. I'll have a look for some precision ground.
