Well my 99p eBay one has arrived from China. It would benefit from a bit of brasso to look like the $38 version, has 'INCEPTION' laser-engraved underneath it, spins for several minutes and if it finds a good place to settle the only way you can tell it's moving is that it doesn't fall over!

P.S. – it fascinates Luna the Lab who reacts as if she has had an electric shock when her nose hits it!

I my days of wood turning, one of the toys I made was a top, a 2" dia wooden body, with a cut off 4" nail through, the head formed to a cone to spin on, the rest out the top to wind some string on. A handle with a forked end with the string wound in the gap in the fork. A good pull on the string and about 5 minutes spinning time. If you didn't like that, I made Yo-Yo s too.

Having looked at the forever spin ones they are a lot of money for what they are. They’re quite small and fiddly so I’m going to chuck some Ti bar and make one to see how it goes. I’m also looking at gyroscopes so if anyone has any thought on those I’d love to hear them. Mick

Why use titanium? Steel has double the density so twice the momentum.

Regarding the ebay version, interesting that it seems to cost 99p whereas the "foreverspin" comes in at $38 for the cheapest up to $195 for the tungsten version. Mind you, they won't be making the latter on your average CNC lathe.

The $38 to $195 has nothing to do with the cost of the tops. It's to pay for all that d******* advertising that keeps popping up on my screen.

Why not? Tungsten is soft as muck and a doddle to turn.
