Had a bid on this today but someone else nabbed it, you? I am not to vexed though as I do fret re: grinding abrasives in contact with my pristine new lathe ways. However, the ability to grind internal and external with a tool post grinder is very tempting so I will probably keep looking.

I recently bought a little Dumore "Tom Thumb" toolpost grinder for less than the price of those castings ( I was watching those as well just out of curiosity). I have not used the Dumore in anger yet as it needed the motor re-wiring with a new mains cable and the spindle had been bent slightly at some stage in its life.

Having made and fitted a replacement spindle with new bearings installed I ran it up tonight and it seems OK now.

Tomorrow I will test it on the Myford lathe, I have high expectations of it as they are supposed to be the best you can get in the small sizes.

Seems quite a bit of work to complete one of those Hemingway Grinders is/was that a complete kit? looks like it could be missing a few bits.

You occasionally see Boxford “Little Giant” toolpost grinders on Ebay for less than that.

I bought a Duplex D27 3 phase grinder for less than £30 from John Stevensons great site, admitted it did need a bit of work but nothing extravagant,

I have a “Drytex” extractor but still also cover the machine/ways usually in oiled paper towel.

G'day.

This one works fine for grinding parallel rods (eg; hardened crankshafts) on my C3 minilathe.

I don't often see this one referred to in the various catalogues though, and my mate had to chase my pet supplier to purchase one. For $150 Au it comes with spare wheels, tools, fuse etc.

Apart from the fact that everything must be covered when it's in use and a vacuum header near the work helps (which is common with all TPGs' ). I reckon that it was fair value for the money.

Here you go.

I am in the process of making some guards for it, they were not considered to be a requirement on the original grinder so I have machined some registers on the spindle casting to allow them to be clamped in place.

It would "probably" be OK as it was but I get very nervous standing over grinding wheels spinning at 10000 rpm plus.

To give an idea of size, the grinding wheel is 2" diameter, the spindle can also be fitted with a 1/8" collet to allow mounted points to be used for internal grinding.

I am following this thread with interest, although I don't really like the idea of dry grinding in the small workshop.

This, about the Australian Waldown grinder, may be useful.
