Hi guys I have just unpacked my 2 interchangeable tool holders for my quick change tool post that I got at Sandown in December from RDG Tools.
Had problems setting up a cut on my myford only to find they are 2.5 mm to big from the top to the bottom, compared to my ordinal ones. I use 10mm tip tool holders, I looked and they bottom out on the top slide.

They was sold as genuine myford quick change tool holders, has anyone had the same problem.

I can get over it by machining the 2,5mm off so it is not the end of the world.

I suggest a closer look the next time I buy from RDG Tools

Is your toolpost genuine myford or a unit that fits your lathe?. Phone RDG and explain your predicament they may be able to help. The toolpost should overhang the topslide to allow the toolholder to pass the topslide, if it will not then I would venture to sugest that it is the wrong toolpost for your lathe.

Hi Kevin,

As Dusty says, contact RDG in the first instance, they are, in my experience, most helpful.

If they were sold as genuine Myfor QCT holders then they should be fully compatible with a genuine Myford QCT, if you have anything but a genuine QCT then you have to accept that there will be compatibility issues, but RDG should be your first port of call.

As an aside, not sure how you created your post but it has resulted in a very large bold font which whilst very readable, takes up a lot of screen real estate for a small quantity of text!

hi Dusty yes my tool post was on the myford from new it is a super 7 plus, it cost me £7.500 fully tooled from myford

Kevin I had the same problem with an RDG Dixon tool holder when I had my ML7.

 

When you speak to RDG they will almost certainly tell you that the toolholder will only accept a shank of about 6mm! (I may be a mm or so out after all it was a few years ago). This is fine but a heavier shank will give you more tool rigidity.

 

If you check their website you will find that they do now offer a 10mm tool with a section milled out to allow it to fit into the toolholder and drop the tip to the level you require.

 

I now have a Myford 254S, and that came from Myford with a genuine Myford Dixon Toolholder, and that is a much more versatile piece of kit and allows full use of 10mm and 12mm tools.

 

I believe that they also offer a “genuine” Myford toolholder now so perhaps, if you explain the situation fully, they may do an exchange.

Unusual, my (non Myford) tool block doesn’t overhang the topslide but I have no problems using 10mm tooling in RDG toolholders.

I have one of their toolholders with the base relieved for 1/2″/12mm tools which also fits ok, albeit though you cannot rotate the tool block as the toolholder now drops below the edge of the topslide.

Paul you have made some very pertinent observations about the RDG non-genuine Myford Dixon toolholers.

 

The centre fixed mounting block does not overhang the top slide. This means that of course the tool ghholding casette cannot be lowered than the top of the slide and on an ML7 that means that a 10mm tool shank is too thick. That is why RDG introduced the cut away tool to lower the cutting edge when used on the ML7. I had one toolholder in my RDG set that did have the bottom cut away as you describe but that was to allow the use of a parting off blade holder., and as you observe it will not turn because of the clash with the top slide.

 

On my Myford 254S I have a genuine Myford made and supplied Dixon type tool post and casettes. These incidentally are not interchangeable with the RDG ones. The casettes just do not fit. The casettes are aslo a designed to allow 10mm and 12mm tool shanks to be used without any modifications.

I use 10mm tool shanks in my genuine Myford holder with no problems.

I don’t think the block overhangs the cross slide.

Genuine Myford holders have the letter W stamped on them.

I think it was supposed to be an M but they got it upside down.

 

These blocks and holders(even genuine Myford ones) do not go low enough on an ML10 either. Before they went POP Myford was going to supply an ML10 topslide with the stud offset so that the toolholders could drop below the top of the top slide.

Might be worth considering for RDG tool holders on an ML7 or Super 7.

“W” is for Western Engineering who made them.

 

I bought some holders from Chronos to fit my genuine holder and the bottom was thinner than the genuine so you could get the tool lower down.

i have just looked and my ordinal ones have W on them and work fine with about 2mm clearance and was supplyed by myford .

The fixed mounting block does not overhang the top slide. so it looks like a error / the datum has been lost.

have been out all day an have not contacted them yet.

Food for thought there. My toolblock came from Axminster many moons ago but I have a mix of Myford, Toolmex and Chronos and RDG supplied toolholders.

 

I must check to see what size tools are in my Myford holders although I’ve not had any problems with 10mm/ 3/8″ tools so far.

 

I used these holders with 1/2″ tools when I had my 918 lathe but had to change to 10mm when I bought my Super7

I bought four UK made quick change tool holders Dickson type through Ebay for my Myford. The quality is excellent and manufactured in Coventry. Suggest you use the words in bold above to search for them on the auction site.

Has the block got a bush to step down to the myford stud diameter, if so take it out, which will give you enough play for the tool holder to drop over the slide, not the perfect solution but it works.
