Many thanks for all the information, I'm amazed at the response.

Lots of varieties to try. I previously saved seed on blotting paper and always had good germination, its the end result where its gone wrong. Also got themal vents–great asset.

I grow around 36 plants in a greenhouse using ring culture where I cange the compost in the pots, I also change the base soil annually and wash out with Jeys fluid. Thats never changed for years so think its my variety at fault.

Remember doing a bob-a-job, washing out masses of flowerpots when I was (more than) a bit younger.

Last year's disaster was many fruits going black and rotting. Have seen (and smelt) seriously bad gangrene on someone's feet. All came to mind with the black Tom's!  Don't know what the black Tom's were ?

My Dad, now well into his '80's has been gardening all his life. he never uses growbags, but large individual pots.
Last year I had an excess of plants so grew some outside the greenhouse in pots. They did MUCH better than those in growbags in the greenhouse. I suspect the quality of compost in growbags is not what it used to be,
This year I will try the pots in the greenhouse.

Does this forum have to only discussions of subjects that deal with metal engineering?

I ask because malipuation of tomato seeds could fall into a generic engineering category; as such it's an excellent subject for home workshop engineers who also have an interest in gardening and growing.

I see no problem with this thread at all, but thats just my view – others may differ, but sad on them!

Tomatoes going black, caused by irregular watering. Another name is blossom end rot.

Tomatoes are what are called gross feeders, they like a lot of water and feeding with nutrients. They should never dry out, soil to stay moist all the time.

Stripping foliage below the first truss and as they ripen up the plant still strip foliage as you go, the plant expires water due to the large amount of foliage.

Thank you Clive, will follow your recommendations and see what happens. Re my previous post about seed selection via taste testing what's offered by supermarkets. Started yesterday with Aldi. Cheapest packet, rubbish. More expensive in cardboard box, good flavour. Will get some from Lidl soon. Waste not, want not said by parents, so unsatisfactory ones will get skin cut and used with my favourite 4 cheese Tortelloni, in place of usual tin of chopped Tom's.

Re previous post, found receipt, rubbish flavour Tom's were cherry tomatoes from Morocco, 250g, 48p and better flavour are Piccolato, "specially selected", "intensely sweet and aromatic" from Tunisia, 220g, £1.59 Superior presentation in cardboard box, charge 3x as much!

Don`t know if they`ve been mentioned but at the moment the ones i keep going back to is the `Sungold F1 hybrid seeds. They are more expensive than the usual seeds and you only get around 10 seeds in a pack . Ive tried loads of so called heritage varieties and they were terrible ,in northern England climate.

My greenhouse is around 15ft by 10ft and i have even got away with only 2-3 plants. `They grow so fast and vigorous and probably the sweetest tasting ones ive tried. They also seem to be the most resistant to black mould etc…

the sungold can grow enormous .

I had some success with the Russian black varieties but some were disastrous.

I like Minibell. Small and sweet and suitable for window sills.

Remember when I was a youngster my father kept a drum which he put sheep droppings in and topped up with water, this was then used to water the tomatoes that were grown in pots, the end product was great, unfortunately tomatoes that you buy now don’t taste like proper tomatoes. Never had much luck with tomatoes but I may try some of the outdoor varieties suggested above. Thanks for the suggestions.

Surely someone has a table of Seeds and Feeds for common applications. I believe Prince Charles used to experience chatter with his tomatoes but has since resolved the issue.
