      Hi all,

Being a newbie to milling would like to know if there any drawbacks to using threaded shank milling cutters instead of plain shank cutters in ER25 collet chuck.

      Thanks.

I've never had a problem with them in either R8 or ER16 collets, I'm sure ER25 would be similar.

Hi David, No disadvantage using threaded cutters in ER25 collets I do it all the time on my Emco FB2 mill but there is a distinct advantage using the threaded cutters in a Clarkson chuck.

With ER collets or similar it is possible for the cutter to pull downwards during the cut particularly if it is a larger cutter, a deep cut or a cut using the side of the cutter to say dress the side of a job. This cannot happen with the cutter correctly installed in a Clarkson chuck. I have both for use on my milling machine but mostly use the ER for convenience unless I know any of the previous points are relevant to the job in hand.

I have a ER25 collet set… No drawbacks … have done it quite often.

It's fairly easy to play safe using them in ER collets. Turn down an appropriate sized nut for the threaded cutter so that it will fit inside the ER collet holder. Run it down to sit on top of the collet and the cutter won't pull itself out if you are side milling – maybe I should add "they haven't yet for me" !

I have not had any problems with using the clarkson type cutters in er type holders. Make sure you fit the collet into the nut first, it should self retain and be able to spin without falling out of the nut when correctly assembled. It may surprise you how tight the nut should be to deliver the rated performance of the ER system. A ball bearing nut is a worthwhile enhancement for an ER chuck. Although the collets cover a range I try to use the collet that fits the cutter at the top of of its range rather than having to compress it to its minimum size, that is just a personal preference but I may have seen it recommended somewhere.

I thought all Imperial size cutters were 20 tpi, so apart from 1/4" BSW and 3/8" BSF you might struggle to find a nut to fit

I've had no problems, but I make sure plenty of 'unscrewed' shank is inside the collet.

I must get a second set of screwed collets for my Osborn, it may be ancient and huge but the extra roatating mass means smoother cutting.

Ditto for all those using ER25 collets. As long as you tighten the standard clamp nut hard!

Thanks all for the feedback, any hesitations have been resolved, I will proceed with confidence (he says..)
