And you found it where it should be after 30 minutes of searching.

Or when you just received the replacement you bought!…..

Hint: Unless the searching has really driven you mad … the item will be in the last place you look

Stop looking for it, do something else and it will turn up without further specific looking for it

A friend of mine had a most untidy workshop, but could still put his hand on whatever he needed. I asked him how he managed to find ANYTHING ?

His reply was pure gold : T,is simply a question of remembering where you last dropped it !

                Enough said.

                  Yes! That’s about right. 😆

Well, obviously! Once you have found it, you stop looking so by definition you found it in the last place you looked! Certainly, though, it will be in the last place you would have expected to find it.

In my case, things turn up just after I have spent two days making a replacement. At least I then have a spare! Won’t be able to find it later, of course, and so the cycle continues…

Nothing more obvious than that statement.  Perhaps only the poster would continue looking in other places, after finding it?😆

PS:- I keep planning to paint the shed floor white, to help locating springs/screws/washers/things, but still haven’t got a round tuit.

Sure you don’t have a round tuit. Or have you, but have not seen it for so long you can’t recall having obtained it, let alone which safe place houses it?

A few years ago I bought a book. I read Chapter One…. I did not take it out of the house, but I have not seen it since.

A few days ago I removed two parts from my steam-wagon….. I think they have found the book and are hiding with it.

                                  Hi

I get great comfort from reading topics like this as it makes me realise that I am not alone in having the curse of the ‘workshop gremlins’ that delight in moving things about when I am not looking only to replace said items some time later. I have put rubber mats, the type with holes in to catch the swarf, which are effective but they fail to retain any small item for recovery. Instead they encourage the wanted bits to bounce vigorously in random directions ensuring that the part gets totally lost.

I reckon there is more work hidden/lost than has left my little workshop.

My workshop gremlin family has relatives in the house too, but I suppose that’s not surprising give the amount of engineering stuff around the house! Clearly those in the shed have send emissaries up the garden.

It seems an odd but common phenomenon. 🙂

I have still to find two components I removed a week or so ago from my project…..

                                    …..

Some people can be rather too good at “losing” things.

Many years ago when my club rented a workshop, one particular member built two or three freelance traction-engines of 3- or 4- inch scale size, but in later years he lost his touch and his last one was, sadly, very rough.

His eccentricities included denying injectors ever work, and hating any help to solve any technical problems needing knowledge he dismissed as “only theory”. He too could lose anything, but with his patience of the sinner not saint, he could “lose” them rather more deliberately and effectively.

By hurling them away, propelled by a strong arm and stronger words. The rest of us joked that if we cleared the bramble bush opposite the door we would find enough parts to start another traction-engine!

                                    Takes all sorts I suppose.

I normally find things after I have ordered a replacement.

Afore I had one of these ‘ere electronical computery things….

Couldn’t do the sum manually – I forget now but perhaps including an irregular square root or something.

                                        Could not find the calculator.

                                        Could not find the slide-rule.

Could find a book containing logarithm tables.

                                        Could now do the sum.

Next day, bought a new calculator – curiously quite a lot bulkier than the lost one had been, yet both similar.

                                        Three weeks later…..

                                        Could not find something else.

Opened a drawer to search that, and there was the lost calculator.
