Been trawling the net on and off all day looking for 3″ od 10mm wall thickness about 7″ long . There are companies out there, but they want an arm and a leg for it . I’m emailing a guy on eBay to see what he can come up with . He had the right od and wall thickness but it was too short . Any ideas guys .

I once needed something like this, although not quite the wall wall thickness, and found it on a car-builder's website. I've trolled though old emails but, sorry, I can't find it. Good luck!

Bore out a bit of 3" bar – won't take that long and would be cheaper.

Thanks Mike ,think I might be getting somewhere now at last . I could get solid round bar and bore it out ,would be a lot of turning lol .

From what I know of you, you were trawling rather than trolling!

I use Thunderbird and find the filter and search features very helpful.

Hydraulic pipe for large presses can have these sort of dimensions, maybe a hydraulics specialist may have an off cut

A company just round the corner from where I live supplies tube cut to length Nefco metal suppliers Sutton in Ashfield Nottinghamshire. If you like I can ask or you can call them yourself.

That's pretty hefty pipe, Sean. I'd be looking at something along the lines of a discarded hydraulic cylinder to get the wall thickness you're after at an affordable price. Try an agricultural engineers or scrap yard.

Stuff like that is called hollow bar I think.

I bought some stainless hollow bar from Schoeller Bleckman. They were ok.

+1 on drill and bore a piece of round bar if you can't find pipe conveniently. You can use a bigger boring bar as the hole gets bigger so should not take too long. When roughing you can probably drill right through then bore halfway from one end and then turn the job around and bore in from the other, thus reducing boring bar overhang and allowing deeper, faster cuts. In a smaller lathe such as Myford etc, using a fixed steady to support the end of the job will improve stability and up cutting rate too.

Hi ega: It's the curse of predictive text, and I was certainly trawling. It caught me out twice yesterday, once on this website, but it also made a complete nonsense of an e-mail I sent to a friend. Must find a way of turning it off!

I don't know the availability of hollow bar, I think it might be about 1 1/2" bore, shouldn't be too bad price wise if you can find an off cut.

Much appreciate the offer Shaun very kind of you . I'm in no rush , the bearings I'm using for the spindle measure

Bottom bearing ….od of the carrier is 62mm

                                      Top bearing carrier …. od 56.93 .

Reason I'm wanting the wall so thick is for the rigidity , I'm going to be welding the mount on it . I would like to have as much material as I can to work with . The size I was pricing from steelexpress was 88.9mm x 19mm x 150mm long .

Ah! you said you were welding the pipe to a mount with a bearing in each end – so I wondered if it was going to be a mount for an astronomical telescope – which would fit that description! Good ones have two sets of quality bearings at 90 degrees in a hefty framework.
