Bored out to 2" (actually 50.85mm) with a heavy duty HSS boring bar.

The long overhang (of the tube) was causing resonances so I finished with a long, slow shallow cut with my hand resting on the outside of the oily tube as a damper. Worked!

Ooh. 2 tenth's oversize. Gonna need to swage that down to fit. cheeky

It's wonderfully satisfying when something comes out so well, especially when working 'between units'.

I've made a little more progress on the 1858 Burrell-Boydell. I wasn't happy with the original flywheel and a request on "Home Workshop" brought this casting from a few miles from where I live.

The crankshaft and eccentrics were a little tricky as the crankshaft had to be silver soldered whilst leaving the eccentrics free.

I still need to silver solder the cylinder assembly but need a good day to do it outside because of the low ceiling in my workshop.

it was time to make a start on Ray HasBrouck's No3 Rocking Valve engine. I purchased the book containing the drawings a while ago and yesterday I gathered the main materials to make a start (there may be a few bits left over at the end).

                Hasbrouck materials.jpg

It is a small, fairly straightforward design and shouldn't pose any difficulty (famous last words!), I've even bought in a flywheel. I chose this engine because I dont have such a valve mechanism in my collection.

Today I've made a start on the cylinder block.

Started to make the swing arms for my vertical cross engine… one of those days were what should have been a easy job turned out bloody awkward & screwed them up,,, well at least one of them… packed in & went indoors, peed of with my self… face 19

Yesterday was an almost windless day in North Derbyshire which meant that I could do some silver soldering in the open instead of risking burning down my workshop because of its low ceiling!

The item was the cylinders and valve chest for my 1858 Burrell-Boydell.

It now needs a pickle and machining to finish.

Today I fell out with my ARC versatile milling vice!

Doing a job yesterday, it really tightened up trying to undo it. A load of crap had got into the threads and worked right into the nut. Its now demoted to No. 2 vice.

Its a flawed design, in that respect. Some of the "Kurt" ones have wipers on the thread and shim in the gap for this very reason.

Just glad I cleaned it out rather than carry on and bugger the tread right up! (I've seen that done at work, cast iron dust got in there and seized a £600 vice!)
