        Nice One David!

Ironed is about right! Although you have me a little worried – Am I that obvious??….

The swept beach has a practical reason though – we tend to have a lot of grey misty days here, so when we have a weeks SonSpell the beach gets raked over to control sand fleas – they die off in the sun…

I think a Mr Carney may have already done that one so you will just have to find something else to modelwink

One of the two Worthington-Simpson triple expansion pumping engines at the Kempton Steam Museum. Well worth a visit but check the website to make sure the working engine is in steam when you go.

                    A Finished Project

I started a Hemmingway kit for a knurling tool a couple of months after my daughter was born and now I've finished it (just about). I'm really pleased because I'm able to show it to her before she goes to university in a few months.
I know some jobs can take a while but………

Looking at it now I can see errors left right and centre but I've left it as each part was done, the supports made 18 yrs ago, arms 15 etc.
I thought about tidying it up a bit but I quite like it as is because it gives me physical proof that after all these years my skill level has hardly improved one iota.

Never mind, I can start another project now, just hope I can see it out!

Hello Paul, you need to find a project with some knurling. I must say, it looks a nice job and, if it works ok then no one can fault you.

Not much swarf production this weekend but I did knock a hole into a square of 200 x 10 flat bar.

                          Then lopped the corners off

And stood the Otto column on top of it

                                  Nice-looking job!

I made the Hemingway knurling tool some time ago. In use I have found the tommy bar on the adjusting nut tends to foul the chuck and have finally got round to making an alternative nut with hex head which is tightened with a suitable socket spanner.

In my version, the pins on which the knurls rotate are made from broken HSS screwed shank endmills.

Trying to make one of these Knurling tools myself – not a HW kit though – to costly to ship to Namibia!

ega, how do the knurl pins work in your implementation? I see a great big nut on the left side – what is on the other side to keep the pin in place? Also, do the big nuts not foul the chuck or prevent knurling close to the chuck or a shoulder? Seems the nuts would prevent getting to close to the chuck by a degree that makes removing the tommy bar superfluous or have I missed the point..

Knurl pins: these are screwed into the near side of the arms and prevented by the nuts from unscrewing in use. I made the nuts of a thickness to match the projection of the end mill shanks – the centres in the ends of these can just be seen in my photo – and I agree they could usefully be reduced so as to allow the knurls to work closer to the chuck. I did think of trying Andrew Johnston's idea of turning off the surplus hardened HSS with a carbide tool but wasn't quite brave enough!

The Hemingway design (quite possibly now updated) specified a simple knurled knob to the nut but indicated that a tommy bar might be needed for heavier work. Might it be worth your asking Kirk Burwell if you can buy the drawings alone?

The photo is in my Miscellaneous album; I may upload some of the tool in use. Meanwhile, I look forward to more photos from your laboratory by the sea.

Is it possible to put the nuts on the other side, ie thread the right side of the arm for the pin  or as it is already made swap the arms (assuming the arms are identical) then there is no extra width on the headstock side.

I made a knurling tool to a Graham Meek design. The knurl wheels are loaded mainly in shear, so I "temporarily" located them in the fingers by staking (not shown in the photo, below). That was several years ago and I've never got round to improving the method, although, now that I've changed my QCTP, I need to mill off the mounting, which I incorporated into the main body of the knurling tool and fit a plain, square bar. I will maybe make up some new pins with thin retaining grooves for circlips. At least, then, I'll be able to change wheels easily, something for which I've not yet found the need.

I notice that HasBean's tool has the nuts on the side away from the chuck and the photo on the HK website has the same. The drawing I worked to, however, indicates that the nuts go on the chuck side and it seems that I blindly followed this. There is a lesson there.
