Thanks Martin I'll be in contact if I need anything. I have had the book that Stationary Engine did for along time so should be well equiped for some of the machining challenges.

Have just finally assembled my S10V & connected to small spray compressor gave it a test run. Seems to work well, but there are a couple of tweaks to sort out but it is a runner. I changed my mind about the colour & went for car paint Fords 'Modena green' a better more pleasing colour… to me, I know there are purists out there but the 'Stuarts green' provided was too dull for me so I used my alternative choice. I have added a Perspex window on to the valve chest to let people see the valve in action… something different. I have posted in my folder on YouTube for anyone to view if I can embed vid in here all well & good if not link provided…

On cleaning black steel, this is a bit of 5mm black plate, chopped up and silver-soldered into a simple 'U'. A few hours in 'suma scale' a product for descaling in commercial kitchens and all scale and dark grey finish gone and it's ready for machining.

Thanks for the tip Jason; have tried holding horizontal but vid always ends up in the horizontal position when transferred to pc. My phone is Samsung A5 & takes pics in MP4 format which I then convert to AVI for media viewing using Freemake video converter, unless MP4 can play straight to media viewer ?, will have to double check.

Looks good Neil, did you use any kind of "jig fixture" for creating the butt join? If so was there any accounting for the loss of heat transferred away from the needed area for the join?

This morning I finished the first assembly of my ST beam engine , I coupled up the compressor and was amazed when it worked !!! no piston ring , no gaskets , no seals . I know it should work but when you are a beginner is really satisfying to see an engine that you have built turn for the first time . Lots of work still to do on it but at least I know it will work !

                      regards Phil

While others have been debating the best way to stop their short tools waving about I have been in the workshop sticking a few bits of metal together with the welder and then doing some precision angle grinding on the assembled parts. I now have a "casting" that I can start working on. There are a few more small bits to solder on and some filling to do but that can wait until after most of the machining.

                                  Jason,

What scale is the open crank going to be, I have somewhere in my house a book written by Edgar Westbury and in the book there is an enclosed crank designed for a roller, I think, from memory the main "casting" is also fabricated and I've always wondered if there are drawings for it, I will have to find my book. I always get carried away with my full size engines and sorting them out so just sit and dream when I see your beautiful creations.

Martin, its a 1/3rd scale model of a Ruston Hornsby BPR as the 8" flywheel castings suit the originals 24" ones. I'll take a photo with something next to it for an idea of size. Drawings and build series running to about 80 pages where about on the net.

Sounds like the Avling DX, you can make up the crankcase or Engineers Emporuim do castings for it.

JS, if I go for Angel Delight I will get more in as it will flow into all the spacessmile p

                                          A bit of a mix:

Lower and hopper sides are 5mm as are the lower end plates

Front & back of hopper 6mm

                                          Hopper top 1/4",

                                          Feet 5mm,

Bottom of base 3mm as its easier to bend,

Curved lower edge to hopper side 3mm wall ERW tube cut into quaters

There is also a bit of 2 5/8" dia steel for the head to bolt onto and a bit of 2 1/4" that you can just see inside the hole for teh other end of the liner to fit into.

All surfaces that are going to me machined are thicker than needed so it can be treated much like a casting with machining allowance

Few more pics here that I will use when I write up the build.

Boring evening in the workshop tonight

I would like to say that it took a lot of carefull planning to make sure that the live ctr fitted between the bearing housings with 0.0075" to spare each side but it was just luck.

Also while it was set up I flycut the head end of the cylinder to length and added a counter bore for the lip on the cylinder liner to locate in.

Rummaged about and found a few bits of steel that looked like they could become bearing caps

After soldering together they were drilled out to size, milled to width and then bolted onto the main frame so the bearing holes could be bored out.

Bit more work needed but they are not shaping up too badly

Not a very big swarf pile this weekend, I did a few small items for teh Root & Vandervoort Horizontal that I picked up a few weeks ago. Mostly nuts and bolts and a few pivot pins etc.

With MEX out the way I could risk damaging the paintwork on teh lightweight so hooked it up to a S/S ignition and put some 2-stroke mix into the carb float chamber and gave it a whizz with teh cordless drill.

Needs some fine adjustments of teh needle and timing but that will have to wait until I get something rigged up in teh way of cooling water, can't run it for much more than 60secs without risking it overheating. Its a bit sluggish but I'm using a rich oily mixture to run it in.
