I can see the word Clarke on the vice

Is it the Clarke CMV 140? £75.60 or less.
Can't comment on performance as I have not used one, but looks fairly versatile.

Having to make a 3/4" UNC bolt (anyone know if I can buy a nut ?). I failed to notice a chip on the carbide insert that was responsible for a poor finish. The vertical shear tool (thanks Mr Pete) tidied up the finish.

Its a Axminster Mechanics Multi Purpose Bench Vice. Pretty much the same as the one a Nicholas has linked to. I have had it for just over 2 years now and can confirm that it is a superb vice to work with. Extremely versatile and definitely money well spent.

Not being one to sit in the armchair for too long I have made a start on my next engine, can you tell what it is yet?

It also gave me a chance to try out one of the HSS-AL ripper cutters that I got from ARC a few months ago and had not had an excuse to use.

Material- cast iron, 10.0mm dia cutter, 7.5mm height of cut, 3.0mm depth of cut per pass, about 6" per min feed and a speed that sounded right. I have been doing as Andrew J says and working the cutters a bit harder and they seem to be working well. Took the last 0.5mm off the two faces with one of their 3-flute jobbies which gave the finish you can see above.

I've used those many times, on steel, iron and aluminum. They really take off the material!! I think I still have one about an inch in diameter.

More of a "how to". No outdoor workshop shed or garage; do not want large propane torches in the house.

Traditionally, I have only done large parts, silver soldered, in the summer, with bricks placed on the steel barbeque.

Here's a lubricator (displacement type) being silver soldered, the "stand" is an outdoor ornamental wood fireplace, with a bit of steel sheet on the top of the chimney, with bricks on that.

Nice thing is, with the snow around, no problem with accidental fires!

My first real Project!

A fixed steady for my 7×14 lathe – capacity of 60mm bar which is rather more than the supplier's steady. And really quite cheap (if you ignore the manym many hours of labour).

I need to turn the ring round so I can get at the locking screws and also find a hex bolt as I can't get to the locking bolt with it near the chuck with an allen key.

It could do with some better finishing, but I'm ridiculously proud of it, especially since I managed to make it without breaking either my mill or my lathe…

Got a few gear blanks machined up between rush jobs.

Two stacks of two sizes, both stacks are way oversize as each blank started life as an off-cut off the end of a sprocket.

I can hob eight at a time, eight 33 tooth have been done a while ago and tomorrow will start on the stack of 34's shown on the hobber mandrel

Got the top and sides of teh cylinder block done last night and made up the bosses for the oilers and loctited them in this morning. After that I attacked a bit of 2 x 0.5 flat Ali bar and made the frame sides. Doe snot show up too well in teh photo but the outside edge and both ends taper upwards to teh height of the cylinder, then straight to what will be the bearing housings.

Plenty of swarf – 18mm high cut 0.5mm deep per pass.
