I have been asked to let forum members know of a big change affecting of Model Engineer and Model Engineers’ Workshop magazines.

After almost thirty-five years, the decision has been made to re-combine the spin-off title Model Engineers’ Workshop into Model Engineer.

The new title will be monthly and continue the numbering of Model Engineer and will be titled Model Engineer & Workshop a nod to the magazine’s original title “The Model Engineer & Electrician” as well as MEW.

There are many different permutations of readership and subscriptions, complicated by around a quarter of the readership taking both titles. All subscribers will be contacted soon with full details of the changes.

The final copies of the existing magazines will appear during January 2025, with Model Engineer & Workshop appearing in February as the March 2025 issue.

For well over twenty-five years I’ve been a Model Engineer reader and for the last ten, Editor of Model Engineers’ Workshop magazine. Both magazines have benefited from their editors and writers being active model engineers themselves. It’s both an honour and a huge responsibility to take on the task of bringing together these two magazines – the incredible heritage behind Model Engineer and the tools and techniques focus of MEW. I’m delighted that the new publication will have increased pagination, so that in one magazine we can cover the full scope of our incredible hobby, from steam power to gas turbines and treadle lathes to CNC milling and beyond.

        That was the formal announcement.

Please try and keep any discussion here to issues around the merger itself.

I am about to start a separate thread for discussion of how to get the best balance of content under the new title.

        Many thanks,

        Neil

Are we going to see a big price hike?

No, a very small one. Just 10p on the price of MEW.

A larger increase if you were an ME reader, but you will only need to buy one magazine instead of two, so the monthly cost will drop a lot.

All readers will see a lot more feature content per issue.

As a dual subscriber with renewals coming up in Jan which of course I leave up to the wonders of modern banking I just hope it goes smoothly and I don’t miss any of the issues.

                That’s refreshingly good news, Neil

Am I safe in assuming that the delta on the quarterly Direct Debit subscription will be similarly modest ?

I’m awaiting confirmation of any change to subs costs. They are generally a discount on the cover price so I don’t anticipate a major change.

As Neil Said please keep this thread about the actual change. There is another thread linked to above for discussion of  the mag, it’s contents and future direction.

I have moved the previous two posts but would rather not have to move any more.

                      Hi Neil and all,

Thanks for the update, especially under Neil’s personal circumstances.  The amalgamation is not a great surprise to me as I did feel there was some good content but it felt too thinly spread and “padded out” across the two titles.  I had been wondering whether to drop one of the subscriptions but had kept going on the basis of “use it or lose it”, and they are too valuable to lose.  The dilemma has now gone away!

Just to be clear, will “Model Engineer & Workshop” be every two weeks (as ME is at present), every four weeks, monthly (so not quite every four weeks) or what?  Sorry if I have missed a clear statement of this.

I’ll reply separately on the magazine content, as requested by Neil and Jason.

Best wishes for the new (~old format?) magazine.

                      Arthur

Oops, just seen that ME&W is to be monthly.  Must clean my glasses, or get new ones!

                        Thanks

Neil, do you know what will happen about archive access?

To me as it is all uploaded the simple answer would be to allow anyone with a digital sub access to the whole of the two existing archives and the new title too.
