Just been watching the latest episode and Guy’s attempt at tinsmithing, had to switch it off, I was beginning to feel quite ill.

I’ve been doing that as well Graham.

I get the impression that he is or was a failed mechanic and now he want’s to blame everybody else for his failure to make it as an engineer. OT again, sorry.

Yeah, the baked bean thing wasn’t good – but you should have kept watching, because he appeared to make quite a good job of the cutlery (and the forks and spoons)…

Hi, I just call them fighting irons, a term my late brother taught me when we were kids. Don’t understand them posh words.

Guy’s irons did look the part, and they did get passed by the QA lady.

                Regards Nick.

                  Just watched it.

Dead impressed with his tin, about 300% better than any tin bashing I have done. Why is it that because you use machine tools everyone thinks that you can do all aspects of mechanical engineering ?

What really impressed me though was using a tenon saw to cut bread, probably the best use for one.

                    Hi John,
Impressive indeed, I thought that was what bandsaws were for.

TBTGB should have been billed as a comedy, with engineering asides. Rather than the other way around.

                      Hi Chris –

Absolutely – I think the nay-sayers in this thread & the other one have completely missed the point. This is *entertainment*, not engineering, and its very clear that the two lads are (a) having a great time and (b) taking the mickey big-time. The tenon saw for cutting the bread was priceless, as was the use of a micrometer as a G-clamp to hold the escapement in position last week. I can’t think of a better use for a knackered mike than to use it as a clamp – nice fine threads so adjusting it is easy and according to John S, if you whack a Stilson on it for extra torque it holds like a good ‘un.

This is riveting viewing – if only to spot the next bit of fun poked at po-faced engineers.

                      Regards,
                      Tony

Yes – I was wondering that as well. Probably explains why they didn’t show the drill actually breaking through.

I was wondering the same thing. I tried drilling a hole that way once, it would be fair to say I learnt my lesson and havent done it again! I am surprised it got through the BBC H&S dept!

Thi needs to be viewed in the way it was meant, light entertainment and an informal look into our engineering history, kind of a Fred Dibnah eccentricity without the attention to detail

How did he drill that hole in a piece of tinplate? I always cut my fingers off when I try to do it that way!

I’m slightly disappointed now that we haven’t been told the one and only correct way to do it…
