Ladies & Gents,
As I posted on 14th Sep, I had an E-mail dated 11th saying "despatched". I said then that I expected to receive my copy in the post within a few days, and sure enough, it did arrive a few days later. So no complaints from here on that score.
Reading some of the above posts perhaps I was just lucky, but that postal performance was much the same as that which I get here regularly with delivery of MEW (I'm not an ME subscriber).
With regard to content, of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion (and has the right to express it), but reading some of the above posts I do wonder just what it would take to satisfy some of you????
First off, the content is exactly as described by DC in his original heads up post – in fact there is rather more in the actual Special No. 3 than DC describes above. So personally, I don't think anyone can fairly say that they've been misled as far as content goes, though I must say that as I have not much more than a passing interest in steam I did not buy Special No. 2 so have nothing to directly compare with.
Secondly, my personal feeling is that although I doubt that I shall ever build the Stride 15cc 4 stroke engine (for example), for me the article was so well illustrated and explained that there was certainly a lot of interesting meat there – how to make camshafts and machining those cooling fins on the cylinder jacket was both very useful and easily applicable to lots of other jobs.
Similarly, I won't ever build that "O" Gauge live steamer but it was an interesting read in it's own right (sorry!), just like all the other stuff (2.5cc aero engines; shapers, etc). And similar comments apply to all the rest of the content – about the only "complaint" I have is with the layout, in that the excellent photos within the Stride article were A) a bit too small; and B) ended up being placed "out of phase" with the relevant piece of text.
That problem really does annoy me (you have to keep turning pages back and forth), but I also know enough about the economics of mag publishing to know that this is unavoidable, and indeed is a common problem in hard back books too, let alone in magazines.
So all in all I'm pleased with both the overall MHS service AND with the content, so fail to understand some of the above gripes – perhaps you're all much too expert to be bothering with such stuff, having been around since Pontius was a pilot, having seen it all before, and got the T shirt to boot. So why did you buy it then?
Personally, as very much a newbie I though it was very good in terms of both "entertainment" and in its expertise-building. Furthermore, it was exactly as advertised.
As said at the start, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and has the right to express it. The above is mine.
Happy Sunday!
