I've never heard of PUNTS before, are you sure you have spelled it correctly?

Oh yes, I did! We won't talk about the other….

At least those acronyms quoted use existing words … then we come to NICAM – Near Instantaneous COMPANDED (???) Audio Mode. Apparently a combination of COMpressed and exPANDED. It's origin from

Compander chips have been around since I was a teenager, long before NICAM

Having spent too many years in the IT industrty, I know that we are the worst for this.

For the ultimate in geekdom it is hard to beat the early Unix proponents with the likes of AWK a programming language designed by Aho, Weinberger and Kernighan, or YACC Yet Another Compiler Compiler.
Eventually reaching a zenith with recursive acronyms such as GNU – which stands for GNU is Not Unix.

As an aside the GNU project is responsible for the development of GCC – the GNU Compiler Collection which despite its unwieldy name is probably the most widely used programming tool worldwide.

Malbolge is a programming language designed to be as difficult to learn and write as possible. Its creator has never written a working program in it.

Rather easier to write is Whitespace. Whitespace programs are written using only space, tab and newline characters. This makes them rather hard to read.

And anybody got a clue at what speed a music CD spins at in an audio system, 33and a thrird, 45 or 78 rpms and how did these speeds become the standard speeds for records?

                                  .

The rotational speed varies … to keep the 'linear' speed of the track constant … and it tracks from the middle, outwards.

Can't remember the numbers just now, but they will easy to find.

                                  .

                                  Here you go: [ from https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutions_per_minute ]

                                  • Audio CD players read their discs at a precise, constant rate (4.3218 Mbit/s of raw physical data for 1.4112 Mbit/s (176.4 kB/s) of usable audio data) and thus must vary the disc's rotational speed from 8 Hz (480 rpm) when reading at the innermost edge, to 3.5 Hz (210 rpm) at the outer edge.[1]

When I did my train driver training in 1991, we were being shown round the engine room of a big freight loco. The instructor packed a small group of us into the clean air compartment and told us what the various pieces of equipment were that we had seen, 'This is the the PGCOS: the Passenger/Goods Changeover Switch, this is the LMAG: Low Main Air Governor', and so on.

Then he pointed impressively to a grey cabinet with a prominent High Voltage warning sign on it: 'This is the DFT cabinet', he said, glaring at us. We all looked at it, suitably impressed, until someone found the courage to ask, 'What does DFT stand for?'

                                            'Don't F*ckin' Touch!'

I've never forgotten that, and to this day I've never looked in that cabinet!

I've never heard of PUNTS before, are you sure you have spelled it correctly?

Oh yes, I did! We won't talk about the other….

                                                      The other unmentionable one was

Countries of Utterly No Tactical Significance.

And yes it was/is a military one
