I’ve just had telephone call from a well-mannered lying *****  informing me that the the Television Repair cover that I took-out in 2022 was now due for renewal, and she could offer a 50% discount.

Needless to say, l had done no such thing and told her what to do.

My call log shows the number as a rather unusual V1251008030003690412 [now blocked]

So I did a quick search on t’internet and found this report, from a while back:

      https://www.leaderlive.co.uk/news/19625110.flintshire-residents-warned-tv-insurance-scam/

… but ‘phoning the published number 0808 250 5050 only got me a recorded message advising that the reporting service was no longer available !!

      Grrr!!

Why anybody would ever dream of buying an insurance backed extended warranty defeats me, but you pays your money and you takes your choice. They even once tried to sell me one for a vacuum cleaner that cost less than a £100. I think I got 17years service out of the appliance before it went bang. Just yesterday I ordered a new three-piece suite and they tried to foist upon me some sort of policy for incidents that would be mostly covered by the Sale of Goods Act or the contents policy of my home insurance. If a modern appliance doesn’t fail within the first few days of operation, which would be covered by the manufacturer’s guarantee or again the SoG Act, then it probably is not going to fail until you have had a goodly amount of service out of it and you yourself conclude that it has ‘had it’. I am just hoping that my 19year old plasma screen TV, which they told me would need ‘re-gassing’ (whatever that was supposed to mean) after a couple years, actually does fail so as to provide an excuse to buy a new super-duper OLED which I am hankering after but I can’t see the point of scrapping something that is still working perfectly.

Yes, I understood that Michael, my comment was intended to be read as being rhetorical.

It always amuses me that any salesperson tries to sell breakdown insurance along with a new product. (Obviously they hope for the commission)

“You are selling me a product that you expect to break down”?

And they have never heard of The Sale of Goods Act requiring the item to be of merchantable quality!

But, they hope that there is one born every minute

“Regas” a LED TV? Obviously confused with a freezer!  The product training failed!

When we were looking for a new TV we were advised that as SWMBO is a 24 hour news addict we should avoid OLED. The red bar across the bottom of the screen becomes permanent even when nor watching news.

Looks like you were successful, Chris

You see Mark, just like I said, “You learn something new every day” !

I had a call some time ago to tell me that my house insurance was due to be renewed at once and that since I was/am a “valued customer” they would be happy to offer me a “once off deal”

Sounded like a great deal, except that I was never insured with them at any time. I called them back to ask what did they do as an encore ?  Still waiting !
