      Hi Gentleme's

Has anyone heard of the above Company. I have received a tatty tapping head for a fiver which seems to work but has lost its outer cover. I cant quite figure the auto mechanism, some springs missing?p1010024.jpg

Pawson Tapping Head – in 2012 there was a forum post asking for information. One of my club members passed one to me yesterday asking if I could track down any information on it. The company first advertised the head in 1943 and I have traced some brief operating instructions. If Robin Teslar still has the Pawson and would like a copy please ask him to contact me.

Good grief – My dad had the body of one of these in his workshop for years and years, the name rang a bell and I have no idea where it came from, only that it went into the bin 22 years ago.

I too have one – acquired via a rummage sale partly out of curiosity as to how it worked – still not had the courage to insert into my drill though – any info welcome – would love a copy of any guide

                      Thanks Michael
looks as tho my one is complete except for some arm that would be need to lock part g to the quill using the unlabelled screw in fig 3 – I would still like to see a user guide eg how to adjust the torques and will it handle through taps (I have one ’roundtoit’ job that would need an array of tapped M6 holes for which it seems ideal) – has anyone used such a device

I was looking this morning, and it appears that the Vertex version is 'remarkably similar'

I bought a tapping years ago from Chronos,I think, for a job that never came along. I think I have used it about 3 or 4 times over the last 12 years ! For most jobs,it,s not worth the bother of setting it up,but it seemed like a good idea at the time ! Does this ring a bell?.

I got one from messrs Rotagrip and used it to tap 192 M4 holes in silver steel with a form tap. This was for the roller slides for my bench draws. I think it was worth it in the value of the taps I might have broken doing the job by hand laugh. Since then, it's been used to tap about a hundred M6 holes in aluminium and a few other jobs.

Basically, they're not a lot of use most of the time, but as soon as you get a project that needs half a dozen or more threaded holes on a flat surface, they are a very useful tool to have. Had I known that 20 years ago, I'd have only bought spiral point/flute and form taps, since they can be a bit fraught with hand taps!

Seem to have got a number of members interested in this – have not used the forum much so not sure how to pass on the information that I have. It is only a one page scan from a copy from BSA tool catalogue 1952. Privat Message me with contact details if you want a copy –  I have not had a chance to 'play' with it yet but can let you know how I get on.

I used a Pawson tapping head when apprenticed as an instrument make, main use was 2 to 8 BA in aluminium, brass and cast iron, i think max capcity was around ) ba or 1/4 bsf.nice machine to use rarely broke taps ,having a nice smooth reversing action, the machine I disliked was the Archer tapper,a larger thing with a capacity of 3/8 whit or maybe a little larger.the forward reverse action was harsh and snatched A long time ago but I still remember them,in two weeks time its 60 years since I started work,Still have all my English made tools in their Moore and Wright cabinet,The Pawsond head had a cover which was either pressed or spun aluminium alloy similar but smaller than the magneto covers on Villiers engines.

Mike Smith – Thanks Nigel for the user information on the Pawson Tapping Head. I am 82 and have always been interested in small engineering tools and what they were used for – so much of this information was never written down and as equipment was replaced how to use the old tools were forgotten. The clever part of the Pawson design seems to be the facility to change the four springs to adjust the torque. The cover on the later versions had four spare springs on the top – two strong and two weak.
