So I bought a somewhart tired late ML2 lathe 4 years ago with all good intentions. However the knackered spindle and bearings along with lack of space in the garage and being very busy with the day job meant that other than aquiring a replacement used spindle and bearings, a 3 phase motor and VFD, the ML2 hadn't turned under power.

A few months ago I managed to make space in the garage (and installed a SX1LP mill from Arc Euro). I finally started to work on the ML2. Then a ML7 appeared in the forum for sale ads and it wasn't far away from me. A quick drive and I was the owner of a very early (<500 serial number) ML7 that had clearly been well looked after as well as being used to make a couple of locos by the previous owner. That was a just under a month ago. I've not been so tardy this time. The ML2 has gone to a new home, and the ML7 basically set up.
I've fitted the 1/2 hp 6 pole TEFC 3 phase motor I'd bought for the ML2 and actually made some swarf this afternoon. Waiting for a new belt and some other bits to finish the installation properly but nearly there.

Photo, please. Not of the swarf but the lathe!

What belt are you going to fit?

The motor is a GAMAK 370W 6 pole B3 foot mounted totally enclosed Fan cooled model. These are currently available NOS on ebay for £45 shipped. The motor has a 19mm shaft so using a 75mm general purpose pulley.

Belt is a Z section 10×6 mm to suit the 175mm countershaft pulley. That will ride low on the motor puller giving an effective 70mm diameter. The standard 35.4" / 900 mm belt is just too short so I've ordered a 37.5" / 952 mm one. Currently running a old 40" / 1016 mm belt that was in the junk box. it's a bit too long and worse has a set in it so does not run smoothly.
I'll try to do photos tomorrow.

Hello Robert, there was an article in MEW June/July 1991 on making a clutch for a ML7,a friend and I followed the article instructions. We both found that the leather clutch face got polished and caused some slip, a piece of crushed rosin as used by violinists trickled in the partially opened clutch, soon cured the minor problem. I think I may still have the article, should you be in need of it. John

Great, but I'm sure I'm not the only one to wonder what other interesting gems lie behind the sheet

Behind the sheet there is mostly a wall. else where in the garage the contens range from bits of Thrust SSC through electronic tet equipment to radioactive sources…

There is some swarf on the lathe, just not a lot, yet.

Many thanks for the pictures. It looks good.

What tooling came with it? Four jaw chuck? Faceplate? I assume you have a full set of change wheels.

An original, if slightly tatty "preliminary cataogue of the Myford ML7 heavy duty 31/2" center lathe"
