Can someone tell me why some surface/marking out plates are made with a surface that has been cut into raised squares with a ground finish as opposed to simply ground flat..

I have been given a large plate, 24" x !8" plate of this type and am wondering if it it is worth getting it reground. It would only need a lick over to restore its accuracy.

It sounds like you might have a lapping plate. The grooves are so that the lapping compound has somewhere to go.
