I am used to the quirks and foibles of this website but one thing I have never had problems with is logging in automatically.

This morning, out of the blue. I can log in, click the 'remember me' box, view posts etc. If I then close IE8 and use the same desktop shortcut I always use, which takes me to the latest posts, its forgotten me!

I know logging in on a different computer will log me out of my main one but normally I can stay logged in for weeks.

Any suggestions (not to try Mac's, Firefox etc, please!)

      Ian

Ian, it might be worth you upgrading to IE9, it may sort out your problems.

Not that I have any using Firefoxwink 2

IE9, I would if I could, but I run XP not Windows 7.

Oddly if I open and close IE several times in succession and check to see whether this site remembers me, it does, but not every time!

It might be worth clearing the browser cache and/or any recent browsing history. You should find a command to do that under one of the drop down menus – "tools" or similar.

It might be worth resetting the shortcut to a page that works as you want as well, sometimes the settings seem to get corrupted.

Any reason why you've got to stick with Bloatsoft Internet Explorer? It's the worst browser known to man! Just curious as to why you ruled out the solution.

You are entitled to your own opinion but I dont agree with it.

On reflection, are you saying that my login problem is caused by IE and if I use something else I will have no problems?

I was simply saying that asking for advice, then giving a list of banned possible solutions is not the best way forward.

I asked if there was a particular reason why Firefox, or indeed any other browser, couldn't be tried. I stopped using IE about 10 years ago – I still use it sometimes and every time it reminds me what a mess I avoid. If they didn't copy every novel idea the others think of, crumbs it would somehow be even worse!!

Surely it is only sensible to try another browser? Takes 10 minutes and might solve the problem. As you no doubt know, it won't interfere with your preferred browser. I admit, going out and spending £1500 on a Mac as an experiement would be silly.

I now use Chrome and Firefox.

It sounds like a cookie problem. Go into Internet Options and clear your cache and history and make sure cookies are enabled.

The restriction I placed were not quite tongue in cheek but were prompted by the innumerable (and conflicting) nuggets of 'advice' given in connections say with the 'adverts overwriting text' subject. I know the people giving the advice do so in good faith and with the best of intentions but often completely irrelevant.

As a matter of fact I have tried both the browsers you mentioned less than two weeks ago but after using them a few times have gone back to IE.

For a completely different reason I cleared the cache and cookies a few days ago following 'official' guidance given on Google's own help pages, (it was to make Google search remember its settings). Basically the advice did not work and I still cannot turn off 'instant results'. Since deleting the cookies, cache etc I have re register and login on many of the sites I use so its something I am going to avoid in the future.

I am reasonably proficient in using PCs but I still don't know how one is supposed to clear the cache and cookies without losing the ones that are useful.

                            Hello Ian,

I don't know how you can clean, selectively, cookies from within Internet Explorer.

My OS is Windows XP and the IE version installed is 7.x and it doesn't allow me to choose which cookies to allow or remove. The option commanding this option is completely opaque.

In FireFox there's an option to totally close permission for cookies and then an option that lets me to chose exceptions. this option, in Firefox is totally open letting me delete cookies one by one . I use Firefox and like it for technical reasons.

If you can't control the cookies from within IE, then you can use a free tool called CCleaner (www.piriform.com/CCLEANER ) that lets you clean, among many other items, selectively, cookies Internet Explorer.

I am one more guy abhorring IE. For both ethical and technical reasons.

                            Best regards

I use crap cleaner already but my problem is knowing which cookie to keep and which to get rid of. Many of them do have sensible filenames but on my PC the majority do not.
