      Hi There

I am looking at different subscription gifts for both Model Engineer and Model Engineers' Workshop.

I am considering various items of measuring equipment. We are limited to a budget but as we don't make a profit on the gifts, the retail price of the gifts can be quite high.

Certain gifts I have suggested already work well, the Foundations of Model Engineering book, the 4 inch digital calliper and several others.

However, we can always do better. With this in mind, I have selected a gift that I think might encourage a UK reader to subscribe, a digital depth gauge reading to, I think, 30mm is the first of these and I think it will be useful in the workshop. I have an evaluation one on the way.

What would you like to see as a subscription gift? Please be realistic in your expectations, this is a genuine attempt to give you a decent gift in return for subscribing.

      What would make you subscribe?

Do you have any suggestions for overseas subscription gifts, this is a difficult one as I have to convince the office to do this so postage will be a critical factor in this. Perhaps a digital gift rather than a physical gift although I am not quite sure what yet.

Which of the Workshop Practice books would get you to subscribe? We have done a couple of these to the USA. What would Australian readers like as a gift, again postage could be a problem.

      regards David

Don't like the idea of bribes to buy at all. The mags should sell on merit of content – if they don't, then improve them.

Will these be bribes to keep us re-subscribing too, or do we have to unsubscribe & then resubscribe to take advantage?

              Regards,

              Tony

                Hi There

I am not bribing you to buy the magazine.

I am trying to encourage people to subscribe rather than buy from Smiths or the local newsagent.

Yes, a lot of people just add the gift when they resubscribe. However, the new subscription may be a higher price than one that you get as a long term subscriber. I doubt it will be much higher but it could be.

You need to check and be sure it is worth your while to subscribe again. The new subscription should be added at the end of the old one.

                regards David

The most useful gift IMO would be a binder for the year's issues.

I know of a few magazines that give a dicount for a longer subscriptions ; ie 24 or 36 months maybe 10% cheaper or if you subscribe to both mags then the second one is at a dicounted rate .

What if you had a yearly prize that is more substantial that UK subscribers names could be put into a draw and hold this draw at one of the exhibitions ?

Should not be a problem and would be retrospective for all digital subscribers. Might have to give access to all subscribers though.

                                  Hi David,

Would it be possible to give a choice of gift from a small range rather than offering just one at a time? Examples of useful gifts from my perspective would be workshop items I might not purchase normally such as a small pin vice or one of those multi purpose clamping devices which can hold odd shaped items using pins in any of a number of holes. The small vernier was such an item.

I prefer not to be offered books as I already have a fullish library (as I suspect many others in the hobby have). I await a suitable gift before I make a subscription as I already have most of the books offered and I may as well wait until useful item is on offer.

                                  best regards

                                  Terry

P.S. binders wopuld make an excellent choice.

Unfortunately they can't do multiple choice gifts.
The multi purpose clamping device was a successful offer and
                                      will probably be repeated.

Hi David, The subscription gifts seem like a great incentive to subscribe but quickly loose their charm when they don't arrive. I subscribed in February 2012 and never received anything. When I telephoned My Hobbystore to find out why I was told that although the database shows that I am owed these gifts they are not now available. I then suggested that this being the case i was quite prepared to accept the current gifts as an alternative, I was told that this was acceptable and I would receive these as a substitute. That I thought was an end to the problem but as yet I have still to receive anything. Perhaps you might consider looking into this for me.

                                          Regards

Mark, although England may well be a very small place in the greater order of places, however we do seem to have a dispropotionate number of Suppliers for some reason? Perhaps it is called demand.

I wonder what proportion of mags are sent to ROW (rest of world) cf. little old England. David?

Then perhaps the US and Australian magazines, should offer UK Subscribers their free gifts.

We have a budget for the free gifts.

Overseas postage would reduce the budget to the point where the gift is not worth bothering with.

while I am all in favour of getting more subscribers, it seems strange that you are proposing to give them digital copies of articles that do not appear in the paper copy. Would these proposed gifts be made available to U.K. readers to purchase. I would think that any offer of early articles/magazines on CD would be welcomed by many. I have M.E. going back many years, but at times it would be more convenient to get out a CD rather than a magazine. So I hope this is one feature you may implement.
