Help. I am stumped as I need some 1.5mm silver steel rod to complete a pin spanner.

      Unable to find any.

Hi Gordon, I considered that but the holes are reamed 1.48mm and drill shanks are a bit under size. i need a firm interference fit.

Can you not turn down the next size up that you may have in stock, can't imagine them being very long.

Cromwell tools, amongst others no doubt, sell HSS drill blanks in that size (and many other sizes imperial and metric)

                  Clive,

A useful alternative is Blue Pivot Steel, as used in Clockmaking.

                    HI Clive,

how about an old roller bearing….I never throw anything out….need a bigger barn….hahaha…

old bearings have got me out of the poo many times…used an old roller (bearing) to make a large "C" spanner….

                    good luck frank

Hi Clive, I worried about the same thing when making a few recently. Then I realised that such short pins don't need much strength, but my spanners are quite small.

Silver Steel was supplied by Stubs of Warrington.

They relocated to Oldbury and subsequently took up the name of their parent company – Bohler UK.

A look at their website indicates they still sell silver steel.

It is possible to get 1.5mm dowel pins and below. They are already hardened too.

                                Clive,

you should be able to buy some Piano Wire of that diameter from your local Aero model shop it is hard stuff but you could cut it with a mini cutting disc and a Dremel or similar Drill.
