Has anyone here built the ST Williamson engine? My forum search yielded no mention of one. I'm looking for a modest project and having built a few ST models the Williamson caught my eye as being both attractive and unusual. It does look as if it could be somewhat "fiddly" to build however with the cylinder and motion within the column.

I'd be interested in any comments or snags found in the design.

        TIA

It's certainly one of the finer detailed engines from Stuarts particularly in the governor details. It's worth getting the book if you decide to make it, think Tee do it for around £10. I bought it about a year ago with the thought of making a larger one which may well happen at some time.

I built one many years ago. Don't remember any issues. Can post photos if would help.

I just got a new copy of the- book on EBay for about a fiver. Series was covered in ME, probably. IN 1970s.

Thanks for the comments. Seems that there's no real problems, so I'll probably go ahead. Thanks for the suggestion re. MEM. I had looked as a guest but I've now registered and find that that makes pictures available.Someone there has made the fluted, tapered column from solid; phew!!

Duncan, thanks for offering photos but I've just found a very good set on the Station Road Steam website, they sold one recently but make the comment that this engine is "rarely seen". Make of that what you will. Watch this space!

I have recently purchased a kit for the Williamson engine from Stuart models. I have the book from 1981 “Building the Williamson engine” by Tubal Cain but would also like to read and compare the articles that he wrote for ME in 1976. I believe that the articles were published in Model Engineer 1976 Vol. 142, numbers 3542-3548.

I remember reading them at the time but long ago disposed of old magazines. Please can anyone help me out with copies of the articles or point me in the direction of a searchable archive.

                    Many thanks Ray Griffin

My Stuart Williamson is now completed. An attractive little engine, it seems to run well and I'm pleased with it. The Cumbrian connection is an interesting bonus.

Can't seem to embed an actual video so here's a link.

                      Sorry about the noisy compressor..

                        That massive column is fantastic.
