Hi All,

Here are a few photos (there are more in my album) of a 7A I started about 30 yrs ago. Many of the bits had gone missing but since I've recently done a cnc conversion on my miller and built a 4th axis for it I decided to machine from solid rather than buy replacement castings. The result is a bit of a mish-mash in terms of materials and I'll probably re-make some of them but at least it runs. There's a bit of tweaking to be done on the valve set-up, drain cocks and oilers to make and she'll be ready for painting and a bit of wood to sit on.

Nice, i the 7a is a better size than the 10.got one under my bench, thats needs finishing off. I might get around to it inthe next 15 years

I wonder how many sets of Stuart casting there are sitting maturing under workbenches around the world?

Am I right in thinking the engine is fitted with reversing gear? If so, where did that come from. as the present company making Stuart castings don't list a reversing gear for the 7A engine, or is the reversing gear about 30 years old too!

Hi Chris,

Yes that's right, the engine is fitted with reversing gear. On the Stuart site those castings are under the 'Spares' tab. Actually I'd lost all of the reversing gear parts apart from the eccentric straps and I chucked those because I'd started machining them years ago and made a bit of a pig's ear of 'em! All the rev gear bits you see there are made from bar stock. Thanks very much for your praise and remember you'd get a very satisfying result from building the engine without the reversing linkage if it seems a bit daunting.

No I'm not counting either! Another thing is, I don't beat myself up so much as I used to when things go wrong. I've just noticed the scrap crank in my first photo; at one time of day it would've ended up thrown through the workshop window!

'maturing'….yes I like that description, made me grin. I'll tell the missus I'm letting the paint 'mature' that I'm supposed to be slapping around the lounge………I hate bloody decorating!

Hi Mick – I have found it now under 'Spares', was looking under 'Accessories'. I can see that from the list that one would only need the drawings and then make everything from stock, except perhaps the eccentric strap.

The eccentric strap shouldn't be too difficult, I made one for a Stuart S9, used cast iron, the one that was with the engine was on the feed pump, and made of brass/bronze not sure which.

Well, here's the 'nearly finished' result.

I'm still waiting to find the right piece of timber to screw it to but I'm not allowed to hack a bit off the kitchen table apparently!

Fix it permanently to the table, it makes a nice centrepiece.

Goes well with the tiles in the background as well.

Rig up a belt drive spit and use it to drive that, very authentic!
