      G'day

      No more hunting for my C3 minilathe chuck keys.

      storing chuck keys on a disc-drive magnet 2.jpg

      The magnet is from a pre-loved floppy disc drive.

      Cost = $0

          Some time ago I did a bulk buy of rare earth magnets for use in the workshop and thought of lots of uses for them. Although I still find them useful for some things, I now use them only temporarily on machines. The problem is they magnetise tools and things you don't want to be magnetic and collect swarf which is difficult to get rid of.
          My own solution for chuck keys etc is a shadow board near the lathe in an attempt to overcome my otherwise untidy working habits.

          Regards John

            I have a lifting eye bolt screwed into the front face of the screwcutting gearbox.

            Just drop the chuck key into that. Not my idea I saw it on a forum somewhere but can't give credit as i can't remember who and were.

              Also the magnets from orange hazard lights of plant etc work well, but as above, I know someone who used them for storing files! he could never work out why they didn't cut well.

                G'day.

                I still have a demagnetiser from early computer days. It works on steel cutting tools too.

                My tools usually get magnetised due to sitting a magnet near the toolpost when working with cast iron. Lol, probably a bad habit I suppose dont know

                  I don't have a de-magnetizer and hate it when swarf sticks to everything which has come in contact with a magnet. Would not reccomend them around a lathe or mill.

                      I once modified the start/stop on a lathe to be operated by the chuck key….can’t start without it stops if removed.

                        Jason,

                        That rather assumes you only have one chuck.

                              Never use ‘m at work…but found one out a week ago.and a 4jaw self centering..funnily enough looked for key…and the key for the other 3 jaw chuck fits….I love pratt and burned chucks big though…the 3 jaw slots are on a taper bit like a jacobs but much more shallow….means it trys to clamp harder as work trys to pull out….
