I would like to build a model stirling engine as depicted on the cover of MODEL ENGINEER dated 2-15 December 1998. I only have a photocopy of the front cover of the magazine and not the magazine itself. Is it possible to purchase the plans ( or the magazine it was published in – if it was published)?

Robert, you’r looking for Vol 161, numbers 3838 &3840, theres enough info to do a build, but DON’T use brass for the displacer cylinder use stainless steel, use this also for the displacer too, aluminium not the best but will do at a pinch. Use aluminium for the cooling fins. You’v got too think about the different materials, and how they work.Ian S C

              Robert,

Try your local library,  many of them keep back copies or model engineer as bound volumes.  You can photocopy any articles you need.  My local library’s copies go back to the mid 1940’s.   If your local library does not have them it is probable that there is at least one in every authority who keep a copy and a library can also get volumes on interlibrary loan for a small fee.  Try your local authority on the internet it will have a section for libraries and there will probably be a catalogue search to locate books in the whole authority.

I use either Warwickshire or Leicestershire as I live on the border and use the online search facilities often.

If you can’t locate a copy, email me.  I may be able to help.

              Terry

Thanks Ian for your hints I will bear them in mind when selecting the materials. As you can see I have duplicated my original request in this thread as well as the one headed Stirling Engines. As the other thread (Stirling Engines) has more replies it may be best to continue with that one rather than this one.
