Ordering some gear tonight for a job making some motor slip rings.
Need a few bits of M5 threaded rod to hold it all together, normally get this from RS as it’s not worth messing with postage etc for bits.

OK looked on the site and it comes in 5 lengths x 1 metre for 1.012 per length so roughly £5 plus VAT, not worth searching but it’s discontinued so look at the new part and that’s in 2 pieces at £8.45 EACH!!!!!!!!!!

I mean come on, I know brass has gone up but 800% ????

        Farnell no longer stock it.

Ebay has 5 lengths for £20 inc postage so £4.00 a length.

I’ll price some 5mm bar tomorrow and see how that works out to thread each end.

                Just an update on this.
More to compare pricing than actually moan about it but it does help

3 metres of plain 5mm rod was quoted at £14.80 from the brass stockholders, lets face it that only a thick brazing rod !!

Now the big bit of brass needed, 3 1/4″ diameter by 12″ long was quoted at £138.00

Leeds Bronze quoted £59 for the same material in bronze. Since when has brass been 2 1/2 times the price of bronze ? All these prices are less carriage and VAT

Ian I have M5 in stainless in stock, has to be brass, bronze or copper for slip rings, I know stainless will do but they will just reject the job.

Off topic, but CPC are good for all sorts of the larger fasteners, which I would otherwise have to buy at a stockholders.
Model suppliers don’t normally stock fasteners over 0BA, but CPC offers M2 to M12 in many materials, as well as Imperial sizes.
Delivery is normally next day, minimum order for free delivery is about £40, otherwise a delivery charge applies.

Usual disclaimer, I am just a satisfied customer.

                  Regards
                  Geoff

Just had a scan to try to find the stuff you require John (Which I’m sure either you or Gert has been doing allready), HOW have WE allowed succesive Govts. to get us in the position that it’s either like the price of Gold or we go to INDIA to try  to resource this???

Have been looking for a replacement cooling fan for a laptop, which has worn cos the numpties designed a bit in GFN rather than something more appropriate to cater for heat distortion, — £34 + Stealth tax    NOT

                      Regards  Ian

John, even McMaster-Carr want $15.48 a metre for M5 all-thread and they’re usually very competitively priced.  So I’d say the prices are roughly comparable – not nice, but comparable.
Cook Fasteners in Mississauga, Ontario must want a fortune too as for their M5 in metre lengths one is instructed to Call for Price.
                      regards, Mike

First post for me here, I work in the mining industry in Canada at an open pit Copper/Gold mine, Last week Copper was listed at over $3.00 canadian per pound, And gold was over $1000.00 an ounce, If you keep a eye on the price of commodities you’ll have a rough idea on the direction the price of metals is going to go, While the currant price for commodities takes awhile to show up at your local supplier it will happen. Copper right now is just about at an all time high so you can expect the price of brass to go even higher. Sorry for the bad news but some of you might want to stock up even at today’s prices. How long these prices will stay high no one knows, But you also might want to remember that price wise copper has historicly been a very volitile metal, Who knows, 6 months from now it might be at an all time low price, But I wouldn’t bet on it.
