      Hi guys,

I am collecting a bench milling machine on Friday. It's manufactured by Steinel but I can't find any info on this machine? I used to own a mid sized mill, an AEW Horizon which was great but due to lack of space in my workshop I sold it earlier this year. I have been looking for a small but well built machine and hopefully I've found one. If anyone can provide any info I would greatly appreciate it.

      Dave

Sorry can't help with information about it, looks similar in design to the Raglan milling machine, looks like a solid little machine, what taper does the spindle use?

            Interesting!

It certainly looks a good machine.

No Steinel name on Tony Griffith's site index, for any machine-tool, so it must be rare! It may still be worth contacting him if you've not already done so. He may have something about Steinel, and if not would certainly be interested to learn of yours.

It might be a "badge" name – I identified the large lathe I used to own ( and subsequently donated to Lynton & Barnstaple Railway's workshops) as a German-made Ehrlich machine despite a riveted-on brass plate saying " IXL ".

I like the workshop paper-weight (on the floor)!

Looks like the perfect mini mill if you can sort it out

That looks to be very substantial for the size. Hope all goes well.

Is it actually a mill? Machines that small and that heavily built are usually jig boring machines. Just my tanners worth so pitch in whoever cares to contradict.

Is it a mill, is it a jig borer? Call it what you like, what’s in a name, it’s what it can do and more importantly what you can do on it that matters.

Is that a powered X axis drive on the left hand side.

                          Steve.

I'm only planning to do small components on it so I'm not fussed it its a mill or jig borer. I already have an Ultra jig borer (pics below) and this Steinel would be nice to sit along side it when restored.

Yes I think it is a powered X axis drive

The mill or jig borer no matter wht it is called looks to be a nice heavy machine. The bonus is that for a small machine it has a rising knee which makes it very desirable. I hope it works well for you.

                              regards

I'm obviously no eggspert but jig borers appear to have a non moving base, the headstock part does the uppy downy bit
