I would have hoped that Ian Rogers would have advised that ALL steel MUST now be tested, irrespective of where it came from!

Geoff – I'm glad I'm retired & out of the rat race!

its possible that the rebar isnt designed to take high impact shock forces since the concrete is filled around it when its finished. Is it possible that its simply for load bearing purposes?

Often the ends of Rebar is bent as a requirement of the final structure so needs some ductility and therefore presumably will have some impact strength.

Ha Ha! I would like t o see that machine bend that re-bar in the first video, it would maybe explode!

As A bricklayer / mason I have to deal with re-bar quite often and quite simply it cannot be brittle thats a big no- no. Concrete is very strong under compression but weak under tension thats the reason pre – cast lintols always have a mark denoting the top. smaller bars at the top [compression ] larger bars at the bottom [tension ] Pre stressed lintols are different, as they use high tensile steel and the bars are the same top and bottom.

Some structural engineers even frown at cutting bars with a Stihl saw as it can damage the temper, although in most situations it gets cut with a Sthil saw. A lot of re-bar at one time was made from the hulls of scrapped ships The crap shown in the video, its scary !!!

British steel industry – RIP 🙁

P.S. If HS2 (heaven forbid!) go through – Who's going to supply the steel rails?

One example here of rebar failure, along with basic building design failure was the CTV building in Christchurch NZ, 5 years ago in the earthquake, this is where most of the fatalities occurred. Got a friend (retired) who has MICE after his name, and has worked on many of NZs large projects, must ask him about the testing of rebar in NZ.
