Hi David,hes got another site,same title,started 1st oct,wants to know how to fill a gas tank ect.IAN S Cps also 20thsept and 22nd sept,the way I fill anxiliary tank,connect to main tank,invert main tank,the auxiliary tank sits on scales,open valves on both tanks,open relief valve on tank being filled,watch the scales until the required weight is reached,close vent,close gas valves.I don’t know if this is the correct method,it works for me,someone will tell us I’m about to blow myself up if I’m wrong,I’v been doing it for 20yrs so it can’t be too bad.

so how do we fill this gas tank then? do you have to purchase a proper propane valve or can one make the valve, and what sort of gas refill can do you use ,is it the same as you would use for filling a gas lighter? Does the tank have a safety valve? if the heat shunt used is too hot does the tank vent via this vavle or if it gets that hot is it likely to explode?

Thanks Ian your explaination goes some way to help me understand the principles. I don’t quite get how you arrive at the weight of gas for a particular tank. Also can you buy a hose and valves or is it possible to make them. Regards Stevieboy

I’m not sure what sort of tank you have,I pressume its only little,mine takes about 1kg.Don’t know about heat shunts,but I suppose it stops the gas tank freezing,heard of similar system on a hot air engine-gas tank in the cooling water tank.I would reduce or remove the heat shunt at first,then introduce it gradually.Is the tank homebrew or comecial,if the latter it should have fittings to fit it to a hose to fill it from another container.My main tank is a 5kg cylinder.I do use a small torch (pencil size) I fill it from a ligher gas refill.IAN S C

Hi Ian the thread for the original question came from Martin Ranson,s article Steam Launch Florence, vol 203 No4358 14/27 Aug 2009. I am just interested in converting a small twin cylinder steam engine and boiler that I made some years ago to run on a gas burner. Seeing this article has prompted me into building the tank mentioned, unfortuneatly  not having much to do with gas fittings apart from changing the regulator onto a new bottle etc. these type of vavles are new to me

Sorry Stevieboy I don’t know much about valves,there was a bit about this stuff a few yrs back in Model Engineer.Just went and looked at the artical about Florence,seems fairly staight forward,only i’m not sure about the 340-gram butane-propane cylinder,I imagine that is the type used for a camp stove.Nice little boat,my only boat is about 18″ long got a horizontal pot boiler with meths burner,and a V twin oscillator with 1/4″ bore and 1/2″ stroke.The boat is built of tin in the form of a tug boat.Radio control steering only,Its predessor was an 11″ tug boat with an oscillator with 3mm bore and 6mm stroke and it worked quite well but no room for radio control.Go by the book you’ll be ok,lots of luck IAN S C
