          Hi Steve
          I use ordinary string.
Lag the pipe . put some cyno on it. then paint it white.

              Hi Steve
I use strips of something called interfacing that I obtained from my wife’s needlework box. I cut it into half inch wide strips, and wind it round the pipes. It moulds round the bends quite nicely if it is not too wide, and tends to cling to itself. When enough has been applied, I wind a length of thick cotton around it, with about a one eighth inch pitch (at 1/12 scale), and secure it. I then paint it with white artists’ acrylic paint. The engine looks very impressive by the way.
              Maurice.

                Hi

Are you going to run your engine on live steam? I had a friend who made a stationary engine and boiler with a super heater and lagged the steam pipe from the cylinders to close to the boiler. The string soon discoloured at the boiler end of the supply pipe and turned to a nice toasted brown colour. Whether his super heating was too effective I don’t know but it may be something to bear in mind when using normal string and a super heater etc. I suspect a plastic based material would have dripped away .

                Cheers

                  That’s a nice engine.

I used ordinary cotton (not sisal) string painted with white humbrol enamel for lagging the exhaust pipe on this model:

but on the original they used black paint!

The white string looks more as if it is asbestos.
Another thing from the sewing room is bias binding, or the first aid box, cotton gauze bandage. Its often hard to find any material that does not contain synthetic additives. Ian S C
