      Hi,

How is a steady pin supposed to fit in it's hole? Does a clockmakers broach make a hole for a steady pin the way a tapered reamer makes a hole for a taper pin ; a full contact fit like a morse taper?

      Thanks,

      Mark

          Mark,

Yes, a Clockmaker's Broach produces a slightly tapered hole.

            Hi,

The reason I asked was that the broaches i purchased don't seem to have the same taper as the steady pins I bought. Are broaches produced with a standard taper, with that taper corresponding to the taper of the steady pins one can buy? Or does the action of hammering in the pin deform the approximately tapered hole produced by the broach thus matching the taper of the pin?

            Thanks ,

            Mark

Ah … I see your point, Mark

Sorry, I can't remember what taper is on the Broaches, but I believe it's standard.

You will [hopefully] find that the Broach is a shallower taper than the pin and, as you say, hammering in the pin will spread the hole slightly.

Don't forget to support the Plate on a suitable Staking Block.

P.S. The old Clockmakers would just turn the taper onto a straight pin.

I wonder if tapered pins are supposed to go in straight holes and straight pins in tapered holes.

                  Mark,

                  This is worth a look
