I have a set of drawings for Martin Evans Springbok. Since purchasing the drawings I have read that there are many errors in the drawings including the whole loco and tender being over width and the boiler over height, making the cab too tall.

My question is, does anyone have a credible set of corrections to the drawings? I would like to build a scale model not a pastiche.

There are some corrections noted at http://www.alanstepney.info/page45.html for Springbok.

Two more pages of Sprinbok errors here: http://modeleng.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=3225&page=3

          Good luck.

            Hi Paul
I posted 2 pages of errors I found look at

            **LINK**

As I am progressing into the build I have found many other small errors. I will post them on this thread
Also what castings are you contemplateing because the drawings are in error on this the steam pipe should be much more verticle. Look at Chris Vines Bongo in how not to paint… he contributes a lot on proboards. also have found a company that will deliver a boiler in 3 weeks not 9 months maybee.
If you are seriosly wanting to go ahead I can put you in touch with a company who can laser cut the loco and tender frames.
It is a wonderfull club loco pulls hards with many people on board.

Gentlemen, thank you both for your replies. I have had a look at the various sources you mention and I don't see anything too terrible. I am not an obsessive rivet counter, I just don't want to get into what will be a long term project to become disheartened by evolving problems.

I am not an experienced machinist, my background in metal work is steel fabrication (spiral & helical stairs mainly) and mechanical repairs (a couple of car/Land Rover rebuilds, plant & HGV repairs).

I am building a Stuart Turner beam engine which someone has started and messed up to polish up my skills .

I thought I would start with the tender to see how I get on – does that sound a sensible order of work?

One thing I don't understand is that the suppliers mention 'cast' springs for the tender. I'm not an expert but cast iron isn't terribly bendy…

I am certainly interested in laser cut frames, I don't intend to make what I can buy, time is far too precious.

              Kind regards Paul

The ST engines are a great way to polish up the skills.

I am not a loco man (stationary, IC engines and steam powered construction equipment for me) but I have read many accounts of builders starting with the tender on a loco build for various reasons. I would say it's a good idea.

The cast springs will likely be dummies for appearance only – the wheels may be left unsprung and the dummy cast springs used (a rough ride. hard on wheels and axles), or real leaf springs can be fitted in place of the dummies (can involve lots of small bits in smaller scales), or coil springs fitted inside the frames out of sight can be used (simple and robust but will need some re-designing to fit, likely).

Are you planning to ride the tender? if so, some form of working springs might be better in the end…. literally. Riding a driving car would be better, and in that case, unsprung tender wheels / dummy cast springs are probably OK.

                  Hi Paul,
The tender springs are dummies and can be purchased from Reeves and other companies. I purchased a laser cut kit for the tender. It is not practicle to ride a B1 tender also the wheels should be solid and not spoked. I have the photocopy of the ME articles. plus lots of other facts on the loco that I have researched

Everyone have a pleasant Christmas break

                    Hi Springbok

Where can I get a copy of the original construction articles? As a beginner a blow-by-blow account of construction could be very useful. Happy to pay costs etc.

                      Hi Paul,

                        Hi Paul,

It took me less time than I thought there are a 108 pages of articles so happy reading, all in JPEG format, My rural PO is 15 miles away live in the country. So think I will be going past that way either mon or tues and will post but but may take time. Please do not attempt to return postage as will cost you more than it is worth.
The last 2 pages are a list of laser cut parts and sources, certainly the frames would be worthwhile save a lot of hacking of metal.

Merry Cristmas and a proseprous New Year to all
