      Hi All,

I've got a round column mill that does not have a spindle lock. This makes tightening collets "interesting".

I've just seen a suitable tool to help with this at this website:

The only downside is the shipping cost which doubles the cost of the tool.

Anyone know of a UK supplier? I've had a look at Warco's site (they supplied the mill about 9 years ago) but they do not list it.

      Thanks for any pointers,

      Iain

It looks like it is laser cut so you could draw it up and get it done over here.

Looks straightforward enough to make from a piece of flat plate, dill a hole and file the engaging "teeth" to fit. Doesn't need a great deal of precision.

A bit of googling will find other methods of locking the spindle on similar X3 type lathes or just file something to suit.

I've never had a problem tightening anything in my X3, maybe I've got a strong grip?

Looks like I'll have to get the drills and files in to play. I've just measured up and the one I linked to is too big. Mine is 22mm od and 17mm root.

ArcEuro sells a wide range of collet nut spanners — see here:

I don't own an X3 but the picture of the X3 spindle in the Arc catalogue shows a slot in it (for a taper release wedge?) Is there some way of being able to poke a temporary bar into this slot, perhaps through a small but well-placed hole in the side of the head?

                      Neil?
