Do I have to fit 3 phase motor.

I recently completed a 3-phase conversion to my Chester Eagle 30 mill.

I bought a drop in motor rated at 1.1kw ( basically the same rating as the single phase motor) from an Ebay seller for around the £110 mark and a suitable vfd from another seller for less than £80…

Add together the cost of some wiring and switches the whole conversion was done for less than £225…

Without knowing what motor size you have on your mill, I cant advise…

          Cheers

          John

            Hi Ron,
Single phase motors are not suitable for variable speed operation. You would be better off fitting a three phase motor and inverter. If you search back through the forum I think you will find that this has been discussed before.

            Les.

hi i use a 12v car window motor and a small clutch with a variable 2 way speed controller works fine on my Chester mill and it is a safe voltage

              ty Kevin

                Hi Les,

My Milling machine (equivalent to Warco WM18) and Warco lathe WM280V-F have single phase motors and variable speed. How is this achieved if what you say is correct. I know little about motor control,

Best regards for the New Year,

                Terry

Surely you mean this for the table traverse? Ron needs it for the spindle drive.

To the best of my knowledge, the WM18 mill and the WM280V lathe both have DC permanent magnet motors which easily lend themselves to speed control using either MOSFET based or SCR based controllers.

                        Hi Terry,
Are you sure that the motors are single phase ? I have only seen either 3 phase or DC motors used for variable speed machines. (Except for electric drill which use series/universal motors but these have vary poor speed regulation.)

                        Les.

                          Hi Les,

Have just checked the lathe spec and apparently it uses a DC motor which probably explains it,

                          Regards,

                          Terry
