Having seen those “special” bolts funny sketches over the years, I have always fancied having a 3D version.

I had a bit of spare time, so drew up all the bolts and 3D printed them.

I’ve put some in a frame for the shed and another to take to work for my office.

It’s a simple thing, but makes me happy!

Seen these  before but still made me laugh. However, when I looked at the bolt for a countersink drilled too deep (middle row, second from right) I realised that I’d recently come across exactly that bolt in real life. Look on the site for the Australian tank museum where they restore WW2 armour. Apparently, armour plate was bolted on using bolts with a long tapered head fitted into a tapered hole to finish flush with the surface of the armour. Standard headed bolts. when you hit them with an anti tank  shell have an annoying habit of shearing off the head and the rest of the bolt gets fired into the tank at great risk to the crew. A tapered head bolt just seats more firmly into its hole.

Sometimes, life really is stranger than fiction.

Hi, back in my old maintenance job years ago, there were bolts with a tapered head, similar to that one for a countersunk hole drilled too deep, which were used to hold a large kiln tyre onto the kiln saddles, there wasn’t any screwdriver slot or a hexagon hole to stop them from turning, as the taper was sufficient enough. We used to get two or three broken ones to replace on the Monday maintenance day, and occasionally they were a pig to get the broken ones out, and sometimes had to gas cut the taper off, and then drive the shank through to the back, luckily the steel tyre was about 60mm or so thick and about 200mm wide, so it didn’t get hot enough to start the burn process. about ten years after I started in that job, that kiln was replaced by a hot air bed fluidising kiln, which was much more efficient.

                Regards Nick.

                  Thank you for the feedback☺

I’ve a few more I may add, but having taken me 10 years to get around to doing these, it could be a while before I do more……

                    Hi JimB

I’ve been searching the web for a supplier of bolts like them, seem hard to come-by! Mind the one mentioned before (middle row, on the right) were used in Simms starters (a forerunner to the CAV axial design), as fitted to Gardner engines 2BA thread I think. But it’s a lot of years since I overhauled either type. What for or why who can tell.

You do occasionally get the offset head design in wood-screws, They only put 1 per box so you have to buy a lot of boxes if you need a set of them.

You could CNC many of those out of steel. I wouldn’t mind a set at the right price!

Nice job. No doubt will be a conversation starter that slows down your day. 🙂
