Films of some locomotive and aircraft can be fun to see, but the capture/landing of this first stage rocket is very impressive.

You can jump around to see the highlights but at 3h33m40s they reshow the landing from different cameras.

To anyone who has a modicum of engineering practicality that is seriously impressive!!!!!! I am not easily awestruck but I am today!

Thunderbirds used to get theirs into a swimming pool 🙂 Strange how fact usually catches up with fiction in so many areas.

Yes, Gerry Anderson was ahead of his time! 🤣

It is, as said an amazing achievement. Just seeing earlier rockets land on a pad was impressive enough.

Quite something – but part of me wonders how they ever got there. I can imagine an early design-review:

                You want to …. what??

Apparently Elon had suggested in that meeting “why don’t we use a pair of chopsticks to catch the booster, like in the Karate Kid where the Master plucks a flying fly out of the air with a pair of chopsticks”

A loud noise was heard as jaws hit the floor. But once Elon gets an idea in his head…

Very impressive maybe, but isn’t it realy just to satisfy an already bulging ego?

Remarkable compared with the old Apollo 11 Spam can dropped in the ocean and fished out by the navy.

There was a BBC(?) documentary a couple of years ago on Musk. An undoubted supremely intelligent genius but a thoroughly unpleasant man with a family background that reflected the worst aspects of South African apartied. This manifests itself in his politically motivated tweets, no less in his comments on the recent unrest in the UK and his support for Trump. To have any admiration for the technical achievement, I personally have to separate them from the man himself.

He has his eye firmly on the money, don’t worry. Huge US government contracts launching space stations etc. But more importantly, total control of the next generation of internet and phones, using his Starlink satellites.  That boy has big plans. Keep watching.

Just have to idly wonder though, how many Tesla EV cars will it take to offset the carbon footprint of one Spacex flight?

Nearly there, but if you were facing re-entry after lunch and had to choose Apollo, Shuttle or Starship? 🙂

Can anyone tell me how the Heavy booster homes on the pad. i.e. what is the technology used to locate the pad. Is it  laser based etc.

Apart from the technological offshoots what a total waste of money when we cannot even feed everybody.

We can certainly feed everybody but a lot of dictators/despots etc etc have other priorities!

My Mini 2 Drone has the return to home function. Wherever it is & I have sort of lost it a couple of times.

Returns to the exact spot every time. But I guess that is using GPS to find home. Not sure about the rocket though.

If every body would work, things might work out better for everyone. Some cannot, but when I found a video of a Guy without legs changing out HGV tires and rims, that also boggles my mind.

I wouldn’t think it used lasers owing to the interference from smoke. Would have to be radar, probably a high frequency like 32GHz. It might also be controlled mostly from the ground rather than being self sufficient. However I can’t help thinking of the R101.
