I need a single extension spring with looped ends with a size of 1/16" inch X 1/2" inch. the only ones I can find are in quantities of 5 minimum and with the postage would cost almost £30.00.

Does anyone know where I might lay my hands on 1 or 2?

Hi Brian Have you tried Ashfield springs. I have bought from them local but you may have to have a minimum order price. I added a few extra springs on to make up order. Nunbrook road Huthwaite.

Forgive me if I am being dim, Brian … But

I have difficulty visualising what you need, given only two dimensions

… is 1/16” the wire diameter; the coil diameter; or what ?

Just to clarify; 1/16" is the outside diameter, Ashfield Springs (usually my first choice as they are just down the road) do no do springs this small according to their catalogue. The 0.5" is a little flexible ( please excuse the unintended pun), to the centre of the loops or o/a length would make little difference. Ebay revealed nothing approaching this small size, apart from entries from the US of A and the postage is horrendous given that a dozen springs wild fit into the normal letter envelope.

Many thanks to all who replied, I'll keep looking.

Take a look at your lawnmower to see if it has a Briggs and Stratton engine. Lots of little springs around the carburettor on those.

                        Thanks for the clarification, Brian

Now that I’m on the right wavelength blush the most likely source I can think of is scrap cameras.

If the Charity Shops were still open, I would suggest that you grabbed a few of the plastic 35mm, or cartridge, jobs that no-one wants these days.

Those are fearfully small springs. Ever thought of making your own?

GLR Kennion do 0.115" x 0.5", but 0.062" dia.is going to be difficult I'd imagine.

As a film camera collector I have been inside many and that is very small (ie never seen one less than 3/32 dia and rarely that) even for that usage.

EDIT had a quick look at a few exploded diagrams of cameras – (Kodak, Nikon FE, Spotmatic) and found nothing. There appears to be one in a Minox Spy camera under the frame counter according to the diagram but you are not having mine!

Many thanks Clive and Bill but I already have one of those and it would work at a pinch but is a bit overscale on a 1.5" inch traction engine.

An outstanding response from this wonderful Forum, I have now been offered numerous springs and one is exactly the right size, and all for a donation to the RNLI!

                                          Thank you all.
